have job and $$ but no one will rent to us why?

My husband works 40 hrs a week while I take carre of our girls. We bring in about 1100 a month plus another 2-400 in childsupport. We've been told from 4 apartments that we dong make enough $$ (im talking small $600 a month apartments). Are there any places for us to get help with this? We live in Bettendorf Iowa.
