Mass layoffs in my town

Post by Rachel Fight »

I just moved to Florida and need help with a down payment and finding an apartment. Also finding a job out here too. I moved down here because I got laid off because the casino I worked for shut down operations and 3 others too so there was almost 8000 people without a job and looking for jobs.

Most places will not offer assistance until you have some type of employment. Check out the places on here that are available in your area and try 211 for local info.

I am contacting you on behalf of my brother who was recently laid off from his job and resorted to doing temporarily placement work this week for minimal money to try make ends meet. He is under stress due to having his May rent coming up and Epcor utility, and Telus bills past due. What kind of help is available for him?

Hello, my family is going through some pretty hard times right now. Back at the beginning of May my fiancé lost his job due to massive layoffs, he applied for unemployment and was denied. He appealed the decision and was again denied. Also about the same time the engine went out in my car and it will need a new engine that will cost about 2000.00 to fix I have been told, we cannot afford that. So we are down to one vehicle, which for the time being is working ok. Hopefully I can rectify that situation by the time school starts back, our little boy will need a ride to school as well as me to work and Dan to continue to search for employment. But currently there is a more pressing issue.
We also got behind on our rent for the month of June. So at the beginning of July when again we could not pay our rent, we got an eviction notice, we went to court on July 8th and were given 7 days to vacate. We talked with the property owners who graciously gave us until the 29th of November to get caught up for June and July, 1900.00. The owner gave us to November for june rent. We were hoping that the unemployment appeal would come through and would be able to take care of it with that, but that did not happen.
I have tried to get a small personal loan, but I have an active Chapter 13 bankruptcy that I filed 2 years ago that prevents me from doing so, my fiance has applied with numerous places, had some interviews, but still has not found employment. So may people were layed off it is hard. I have tried to get a loan through my job where I have worked for going on 9 years and even asked to cash in my vacation time but, Xerox will not allow that. We have a 6 year old son who will need to be starting back to school on 1/10/19. If we cannot get some kind of assistance our son will be homeless and the thought of that breaks my heart. I have tried with government agencies who tell me that even with my lone income, we make too much money for help from them (???).
I just want my son to be able to stay in our home and start school on time and to not have to worry about figuring out where he is going to go to school, let alone where we are going to stay while we figure it out. I am desperate, my family just needs a little help to stay in our home. We live at Man O War Crossing apartments, our lease is under my fiance, if there is any way you can help please let me or her know. We have to be caught up by Friday the 29th. I pray that you can help us, my little boy needs a safe home to stay in and a secure place to live to begin this school year...follow up.
I was hoping for a follow up with this, today is the date I was given to be caught up for June and July a total of 1900.00 Centenary UMC has pledged 150.00. St. Luke UMC has pledged 300.00. Is there anything you can offer that would put us closer to our goal? Thank you and God bless!
