Treatment for Leukemia

Post by Almost fell »

My son was a 23 year old graduate of UNC College and just beginning to build a career in video editing when he noticed unusual fatigue. A visit to the doctor did not yield the expected diagnosis of too many late nights - but the stunning news that he had acute myeloid leukemia, a deadly and aggressive blood cancer. After ten months of brutal treatment, including about four months as an inpatient and a bone marrow transplant, he is cancer free and slowly recuperating. Bone marrow transplant patients have severely compromised immune systems for some time, and he cannot work for the time being. They also require frequent medical visits and a great deal of care, so his mother had to quit her main job to provide this care, while his dad is working three jobs to pay the bills.
The family home was found to have mold. Mold, while unhealthy for anyone to live with, is life threatening to a person with a compromised immune system, and the son cannot live there until it is cleaned up. He is currently staying, with his mother, with his elderly grandparents while the family attempts to do the necessary work.
Given the time and money shortages, this is proving a very difficult challenge. With difficulty, the family is reaching out to the community for help. Materials, volunteers, and donations are needed to get the job done. Necessary work includes some drainage work outside to prevent future flooding, ripping up the basement carpet and down the walls, removing the living room carpet, some work on the kitchen floor as a result of a leak that may have left some mold there, drywall, and flooring, and a dumpster, as well as volunteers to help with and/or supervise some of the work. He has received a second chance at life that many never get. A hard working and generous young man, the one who was always there to help with fundraisers now needs some help himself.
We are seeking any assistance or resource help possible to resolve this matter. Thank you for your consideration. I can be reached by email.

That is too young to have to go through that, but there are agencies that help people with Leukemia and other forms of cancer too. Since your son in effect has a caregiver, there may be help for that person as well, including transportation for those medical visits. Some agencies, such as Habitat for Humanity, may also help donate materials to keep the home safe, or look into groups such as Life Beyond Cancer for referrals. They are noted here. http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html ... tion_.html
