Hello,

My name is Tamara and my utilities are scheduled to be shut off. I am trying to find out how to apply for LIHEAP. My shut off was for the 23 and it hasn't been shut off yet, it could be any day. My husband is in construction and was laid off last November. Our mortgage payments are 5 months behind and we have until the 1st to come up with a payment. We are in desparate need of help. He has never gone so long without work. If there is someone who could contact me right away, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for your assistance,

Last year thank God the HEAP program saved me as I was struggling to get work This year my unemployment ran out and my short sale on my house fell through, and I was no longer eligible for HEAP, even though my friends moved in with their child under 6 and they had a balance left to use on their LI/HEAP qualifications we were turned away! Unbelievable! They said maybe if I got on Disability, then I might get assistance. After they were forced to leave their home, I took them in, but now we all are in dire straits and none of us know where to turn. We can't be the only ones out there with this problem. I work in manufacturing over 10 years in the Greater Los Angeles area and cannot believe how many of my friends, like myself that were in the technology business are hurting so bad. Being over 40 has probably been a factor as well in my job search being unfruitful, as seems like younger and cheaper people get jobs first. But my friends are younger and we are terrified of being homeless after exhausting all our resources trying to get work.

We have food stamps, but no income. So we all are trying desperately to figure out a way to keep the power on until one of us gets work and my sale of my house is final. Of course when it does sell, where do we go? What is happening to to help the consumer? Banks get bailouts, we get kicked to the curb and gas isn't getting any cheaper even if my car is paid for we can live in it it we cannot afford a place to park it? I guess. I'm disillusioned by job fairs an online job aps that are just lead generators for college recruiters. I've been in so many dead end Network Marketing MLM's that ended up being scams or just ending due to bad management. I'm a cancer survivor, but haven't had medical or dental insurance for years and really need glasses and a physical. Now I can barely put weight on my right foot, probably from old cheap shoes or who knows Bone Spurs or something, I'm just about at the end of my rope.

The LIHEAP program does come with a number of restrictions and the funding levels change from year to year. So yes, people may have qualified in one year and now the next year they are no longer eligible. So what you are saying makes perfect sense. However there are many other low income energy bill programs for the less fortunate, both in California and nationwide. One good place to try is always a community action agency, as they have resources, information, and referrals. Many also process applications for low income utility assistance. They also run conservation programs. Read LIHEAP details.

I am looking for a onetime payment to help get my heat & gas back on. I had applied for LIHEAP, was approved but I was shutoff before I got approved. I went to LIHEAP to get assistance in restoring it and they were only able to provide $450. I still need another $700 or so to get my service back on. I only work about 30 to 32 hours a week and get paid about $700 every two weeks. I also am behind on my rent as well and if a onetime payment could be done for that as well it would help me a lot. I can provide documents if needed of these bills. I do not receive housing or section 8, but am on a waiting list. Thank you.

That is a lot of money to turn your heat on. LIOHEAP can't provide that. How did you get so far behind? Why are you not working another job if you are only at 32 hours per week now, as the market in Maryland is booming. So there are different things you can do, in addition to applying to MEAP. Many people work much more than 40 hours a week. It is reality. But learn more on MEAP in Maryland. http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html ... izati.html
