I have been taking care of my Mother with a Brain Tumor for about 12 years now. It has been 10-12 years since I have gone on a vacation without my Mom and I recently have started therapy too. I have planned a trip to Florida. With my Niece starting school September 22nd and my Mom has a sitter which stays with her during the week and will be available to me, while I am gone, but the family somewhat slacks in paying for things. I need money to give my Sitter so I can get away. My therapist says, If I do not worry about myself more, my Mother isn’t going to have a caregiver. Can you help me?

I have a lot of stress in my home life and in my finances as is and now my mom has moved in with us. We just bought a house and we have two kids, 14 & 6. My mom is 55, is a senior, and has been a house wife most of her adult life. For the last few years she has been living with friends in Illinois. She would move around often and it was hard for her to keep a job. She has been applying for jobs here but has had no calls. I have tried to enlist my sister’s help in getting her aid so she could move into a place of her own, have food, car, gas, insurance. I had insurance on her car but lost it last month due to not being able to pay the bill. My sister has not helped as I had hoped, no stress created on her for mom being in my house. I wanted to apply her for a HUD voucher but they are no longer accepting applications for Saline County or Pulaski County in Arkansas. She is too young to get on assistance for medical and dental coverage, she is in bad need of going to the dentist her jaw is hurting badly. She is very bad at managing money on her own. Now she has it in her head that she wants to go to college to get an English degree but has not found an online school that will offer just an English degree, not that I’m positive that she will even finish the first year. Short of her getting married, which there are no prospects at this time, I don’t know how to provide for her. My husband is not happy she is with us and I need to get her help, maybe a care taker. But I don’t know what else to do. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated as this is keeping me for getting the work I need done here at work and at home.

There are senior caretakers in Arkansas. If you income is low enough (which it sounds like it may) they can be paid for using Medicaid and/or some other government benefit program. So this will help you pay for them. Also, the medical and dental coverage from Medicaid is not age dependent, so revisit those options too. But there are many resources for the elderly in this country, and explore the programs for the elderly and seniors in Arkansas that may be able to help your family.
