Housing for 3 children in Houston needed

I am recently separating from my boyfriend and moving out on my own. I make about $1,000 a month and am interested in some kind of low income housing in Houston Texas. I have 3 children and need a place very soon. I was just wondering what kind of programs there are out there and if I have to apply and be eligible for them. Call the dept of human services or the welfare office. Yes you have to apply for things like section 8 housing.
