Equal Pay month for women? – not so fast.

For those who missed it, equal pay day was April 10th, 2018 this year. It is a nationally recognized day, but it is not one to celebrate but rather to really be upset about because it really should not be the case, as the date is about inequality. What the day signifies is that it took women (using median wages) until April 10, 2008 to make the same wages as men made the previous year ending December 31, 2007. So, women needed to work over 3 months more than men (until April 10) to make the same income. The April 10 date is a “blended” date as it includes all demographics, but the exact date varies greatly based on race.

As we indicated in an earlier post on gender inequality, women are paid differently based on demographic group. A reader did say that gender inequality post we had was racist, but we are not sure why as we reported on income equality (like countless other organizations report on this topic), and we said it is wrong for pay discrepancies, whether you are white, black, Latino, or some other ethnicity. Any other thoughts on this topic or that post from our readers?

Regardless, the demographic group discrepancies means that equal pay day is even later for minority women, except for Asian Americans who have an earlier equal pay date as their wages are higher than the average women’s. The data is as follows.

  • White women the equal pay date is April 17, 2018, as they earn .79 to every dollar of white male counterparts.
  • For African-American women the day is August 7th, 2008 as they earn $0.63 for every dollar earned by their white male counterparts.
  • Asian American the date was February 22. It was earlier for them as the median wages is slightly higher than other women. They earn $0.87 for every dollar earned by their white male counterparts.
  • Latina women – November 1st. They earn $0.54 to every dollar of white male counterparts.
  • Native American women equal pay date is September 7th. They earn $0.57 to every dollar of white male counterparts.

The annual data used to calculate the wages is from either 2016 and/or 2017. But there has been no drastic change in women’s wages as they were so far behind (~80 cents on the dollar). In fact, the Equal pay date and any progress made was reversed from 2017 to 2018. As the equal pay date in 2017 was April 4, and it is April 10 in 2018 so the nation in effect took a step backwards.

In fact, the progress is so slow that AAUW estimates that at the current pace the pay gap will not be closed until 2119. Only then (~100 years off) will women make the same wages as men. That is unacceptable…and it is unacceptable that pay is not fair today.

Note the official organization that reports this is non-profit equalpaydattoday.org. They use government census and/or BLS data. But their data is consistent with other sources and reports.

There are national non-profits such as AAUW with over 170,000 members/supporters, social network tools on equalpaydaytoday, and many other advocates and non-profits that are fighting for equal pay and workforce rights.
