Wyoming County assistance programs

While not really providing direct financial assistance and cash, the Genesee Valley Rural Preservation Council, Inc. is a non-profit that works with renters and homeowners to improve living conditions, housing opportunities, and help prevent evictions. Counselors may be able to assist both renters and owners through providing information on rent assistance, including the NY Section 8 housing program, provision of affordable housing, offering access to legal advice, technical assistance and grants for the repair of owner occupied single family homes. They also offer access to mortgage and foreclosure prevention programs, as well as help for first time buyers purchase a home. (585) 658-4860

Emergency Shelter Payments of Perry New York (Phone (585) 237-2600) may be able to give assistance in the form of one month's rent or mortgage payment on behalf of a renter.

The primary non-profit to call for financial assistance is the Wyoming County Community Action, Inc. They offer the programs and resources below to qualified low income and working poor.

• Section 8 housing voucher is a government funded program that provides high quality yet very affordable housing for people who are classified as poverty or low-income households. The maximum amount of rent you will need to pay is directly tied to your income.
   
• Help finding a job - Work with a counselor for Career Counseling, Job Search Assistance, Access to a Career Resource Library, Direct Job Referrals to Local Employers, Access to Training and College or High School Tuition Assistance, Post Placement Services, Work Experience Opportunities, Resume Writing Assistance and Reviews, and lastly Job Seeker Workshops.
