Wichita Kansas American Red Cross assistance programs.

Those with a financial crisis that is verifiable may qualify for help from the Sedgwick County American Red Cross. Most of the assistance is available from their Family Services division. It can provide those that qualify with a wide range of emergency financial for basic needs. Referrals and other support is also offered from trained case workers and volunteers of the Red Cross in Wichita Kansas.

Westar Energy bills can be paid by Project DESERVE. The American Red Cross works closely with the utility company to provide them with emergency cash grants and financial assistance to pay utility and heating bills from Westar Energy. The funds are for those that are age 60, residents that are severely disabled or the low income that meet certain federal government poverty guidelines.

Other forms of Financial Assistance can be paid out in an emergency. Individuals or families that are experiencing a crisis that leaves them unable to pay their rent, housing costs or utilities are eligible to apply for financial help from the American Red Cross.

During this intake process, a Wichita Red Cross case worker verifies the applicants need. They will need to determine their eligibility for each case. The case worker will work with the applicant on locating non-profit community resources and other government benefits for those in need. In rare cases, gasoline and food assistance can be supplied. A couple times per month those Sedgwick County families that meet certain low income and poverty guidelines may be eligible for additional financial assistance in the form of free gas cards or grocery vouchers. Medical Transportation for Seniors is coordinated by the non-profit. Volunteers can take them to local doctor appointments for a critical appointment.




Meals for seniors provides them with food and social activities. The program serves approximately 800 hot, nutritionally-balanced meals each day around the community. The meals are served for free at around noon to residents age 60 or older. Food and groceries are for people in Butler, Harvey and Sedgwick counties in Kansas.

There are over 10 free senior dining centers in Wichita and Sedgwick County. Additional sites are in Augusta, Park City, Cheney, Clearwater, Derby, Halstead, Haysville, El Dorado, Mulvane, and Newton Kansas. He meal programs and food is funded under the Older Americans Act through the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging. Additional funds and grants used are from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.
