Victoria County assistance programs

Rent help and weatherization services

The Community Action Committee of Victoria is a non-profit agency that offers programs and resources for county residents. Among other services they offer include weatherization and rent help. Feel free to call them at 361/578-2989 to apply for aid or get more information on these and other services.

Rent Help

The federal government stimulus program has provided almost $3 million in aid to Victoria County. Almost $500,000 of that will be provided to residents to help them pay their rent. In addition to paying for rent, the money can be used for utility bills, security deposits, and other housing expenses.

Both the federal government and the Community Action Committee of Victoria have decided that helping tenants pay their monthly rent, especially in today's challenging economic climate, might help them keep roofs over their heads during a time when a growing number of families lack them, or the money will definitely reduce the number of people who are evicted.

Weatherization

Almost $2 million dollars of aid is flowing for weatherization. This will help people lower their energy bills, in some cases by up to $500 per year. The program is free to eligible participants.

Some of the improvements and upgrades from weatherization include such improvements as:

  • Adding caulking and extra insulation to the home.
  • Money can be used to replace bathtubs, toilets, and showers with water-efficient versions. Learn more about how to get help with water bills.
  • The program will replace aging windows with energy-efficient ones, all at no cost to the client.

The community action agency also offers other assistance programs. Contact them to learn more or apply to any program.
