Urban League Hudson County assistance programs and services.

Hudson County New Jersey residents that are struggling or less fortunate may be able to turn to the Urban League for guidance, advice, and assistance. The non-profit will do its best to help low income families regain stability and get back on track to long term success.

The main programs offered by the Urban League are below. Staff from the agency will work with qualified clients in an effort to find a solution to their hardship. Information, referrals, and case management services all may be provided as well.

Subsidized child or day care vouchers are offered in the county as part of New Jersey Cares for Kids Program. The non-profit will issue payments for full time students and working families who meet the income and other guidelines mandated by the state.

Clients will receive a voucher, or subsidy. It is offered to them as part of the NJCK Program. The government will help clients pay for a portion of their childcare for toddlers, infants, preschool-age children, the disabled, and also school-age children up to age thirteen.

The program is flexible. New Jersey will allow the services to be provided by summer day camps, licensed childcare centers, registered family day care homes, School-age child care programs and the day care can even be offered by relatives and friends of the family.

If you need to find a provider, then referrals are available from the Urban League to day care locations in Hudson County and throughout Jersey City. The non-profit, and the county for that matter, have a computerized database of registered licensed child care centers, family child care providers, and even after-school programs. All providers are licensed and approved.

Emergency assistance and Social Services are available in Hudson County. The Urban League will offer qualified low income families with critical needs. This may include emergency assistance or forgivable loans. A focus is on specifically Jersey City residents.

What may be offered includes advocacy, referrals and follow-up. Clients can learn about free Food Pantries, Welfare/TANF/GA, Furniture and Clothing Banks, WIC, local community clinics and shelters. In addition, case managers assist clients with the application process for other services, such as section 8 rental subsidies or LIHEAP.

Case managers offer Life Skills. The program will provide clients with the experience and training necessary for their successful transition and long term self-sufficiency. The Life Skills training from the Urban League focuses on education, money management, employment, access to non-profit community resources, decision making, and low income housing. Clients to this need to be referred by DCP&P or some other approved social service agency.

Another job training and child care resource is the Work First New Jersey program. This is for Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) participants. Among other things, it will help clients in both finding and paying for quality, affordable child care. A referral to Work First is required from the Board of Social Services.

Counselors from this organization are trained to counsel each participant about their child care options. They even offer referrals to registered family day care homes as well as licensed centers. This is for Hudson County families that receive a Welfare grant, TANF Clients, and even employed clients.

The Urban League Center offers employment assistance and fully comprehensive job placement services to walk-in clients, welfare recipients, and seniors. Case managers assist clients with preparing for interviews, obtaining job training, developing resumes, and job readiness. Or get help in locating suitable employment opportunities in Hudson County and New Jersey. The non-profit will also offer easy access for employers seeking motivated and trained employees. So those companies looking to hire someone can also contact the Urban League.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) for Alternative Work Experience Participants provides residents who never completed their high school education or who have been out of school for an extended period of time help. The agency will offer them a chance to acquire their high school diploma and/or sharpen basic skills. Global Options is another medical assistance program. This one is a Medicaid waiver specifically designed for persons with physical disabilities or older adults age 65 +. Clients need to be able to receive home and community-based services instead of residing in a nursing home. An Urban League Care Manager will work with clients to ensure they get the support they need.
