United Passaic Organization emergency assistance programs.

Addressing the needs for shelter, nutrition, and utilities is a focus of the United Passaic Organization. They serve as the non-profit community action agency for the City of Passaic in New Jersey. Case managers can help low income and otherwise struggling families apply for help with needs that are wide ranging.

Eviction prevention and homeless assistance is offered as part of the Emergency Homeless Program. They also run a temporary shelter that provides a place to stay, meals, and case management in Passaic County. For those facing eviction, rental assistance is made available to them. The currently homeless may also qualify for assistance with paying a security deposit on a new low income apartment.

The shelter from UPO is both vouchered and non-vouchered depending upon funding levels and what's available. The assistance offered is generally short term in nature and may also lead to transitional housing. Case managers from the non-profit will also help clients to explore various solutions that will assist them in preventing any recurrence of homelessness in the future. This can range from emergency, zero percent rate loans to ongoing counseling and case management.

Emergency energy bill and utility assistance provides cash grants and direct intervention service to eligible working poor Passaic residents. The focus is on the disabled and elderly as well. Most of the aid is for those residents that are on the verge of having their utility service discontinued or are suffering from disrupted service.

Direct payments will be made to the utility company service provider on the behalf of the client. This will only be offered if the need has been established. In addition to financial aid, intervention and payment plans will be made between the utility company and the client receiving the services from United Passaic Organization.

Staff from the community action agency will also work with individuals and families to help them develop a budget and address the underlying cause of the issue. They can also explore energy savings and free government weatherization services for their apartment or home.

Another government programs for paying utility bills is the LIHEAP, or Energy Assistance Program For Low Income. This helps pay a portion of a qualified, low income New Jersey families utility bills. The focus is on paying both heating and natural gas bills during the winter months.

The State of New Jersey USF (Universal Services Fund) is also administered by United Passaic Organization. It can assist with reducing energy costs and bills for low-income customers. If you are for to be qualified for help, USF can help reduce the amount you have to pay for monthly electricity and gas bills. Both LIHEAP and the Universal Services Fund can be applied to at UPO during the same time. Or dial 1-866-240-3102 or 1-800-510-3102.

Free food or groceries is offered from the United Passaic Food Bank Center. It is for emergencies and is run in partnership with the First Presbyterian Church in Passaic County. This service is designed to provide emergency assistance to working poor and low-income families and individuals in the city itself.

Most of the free food, surplus commodities, and meals go to the working poor, homeless, senior citizens on fixed income, disabled, etc. This particular assistance program is also designed to meet one of the greatest needs in the community, and the plan in place from the center is helping in this capacity.

Clients to the pantry will be interviewed to determine eligibility for receiving free groceries and food according to income and family size. Any aid is offered just once per month. Recipients of food stamps or welfare benefits will not be provided assistance by the non-profit agency. The Passaic County Board of Social Service is a key partner in running this service.
