Shelby County Alabama Salvation Army assistance programs.

The main office operated by Salvation Army may be able to offer assistance to people that are struggling from the Shelby County area. Applicants come from all different backgrounds, races, and religions. While there are no guarantees to being able to receive assistance, there may be cases in which the Salvation Army can help.

The charity relies on donations, such as food contributed to the pantry, as well as government grants, including Emergency Food and Shelter. Using these different sources of funding, there are instances in which financial help may be offered for expenses such as rent, utility, or water bills. Or some clients can receive a bag of groceries from the food bank, or maybe a free holiday meal. Also, if the agency can't assist, then applicants should have comfort that they will try to refer the person to someone that can.

Emergency Food and Shelter, now known as ESG, is a federal government created program. It is an annual allotment and available from places such as Shelby County Salvation Army or other groups including the United Way. The aim of the program is to expand access to food, shelter, government grants, and related supportive services.

Funds are limited and are generally available at different times throughout the year, on a first come and served basis. There may be money for paying expenses such as rent or maybe an energy bill. Other uses will be for buying groceries, including formula, to prevent hunger. So anything around hunger or homeless prevention is covered by Emergency Food and Shelter.

Shelby County Utility Bill Assistance can be provided by the program above or other sources. This is for residents of Alabama that live in the service territory. The goal is to help economically challenged households to pay their electric, water, or heating bills. In order to apply for any type of aid, applicants need to have a shut-off notice. Individuals should also be prepared with the birth dates of all members of the household, details on how they will pay future bills, and proof of income.

The non-profit can also direct people to other programs for energy bills. Some of them are as follows.

  • Applications to LIHEAP may be offered to families in poverty.

  • Learn how to enter into payment plans for any past due balances on an account.
  • Weatherization will help homeowners or tenants by installing free conservation measures.
  • Cash grants for a number of energy needs.
  • Crisis LIHEAP to help keep the power on, or reconnect electrical service.

It is for homes or apartments with an elderly member, child, or even someone with a disability. Hundreds of families benefit from this service each and every year.

The client friendly, or Pantry of Choice, is operated by volunteers across Shelby County. They will allow individuals to shop for only the foods that they like, so this is a better model. The food bank is considered an emergency pantry, meaning each family will receive enough groceries for only a few days, depending on their income as well as household size. It is a stop gap measure.

The Salvation Army Meals on Wheels Program is for senior citizens as well as the disabled. It can also be used by the sic in the region. The staff will provide a hot meal to the client. It will be freshly prepared, however in some cases frozen meals are used, especially around the weekends, holidays, Christmas, or bad weather days.
