Seminole County public aid and social services.

Financial assistance is offered in Seminole County Florida. Community Assistance programs can help with paying bills, housing, and other emergency expenses. Residents can also apply for public assistance for paying for basic living needs such as rent, utilities, mortgage, or dental expenses. There is a formal application process in place, and applicants will need to also attend seminars and orientation. Call the Department of Community Affairs at (407) 665-2300.

Tenant Based Rental Assistance Program, or TBRA for short, may be able to offer rental assistance in the form of a subsidy or public voucher to qualified Seminole County renters. This program is limited in nature, and there is often a waiting list. TBRA can help families find and pay for affordable, safe, sanitary, decent and affordable housing or apartments. Income limits apply, and applicants need to also be 62 years of age or older, need to be a full-time student, or they must have a disability. They will also need to attend social service type programs offered by case managers.

Housing assistance for rent and mortgages is offered from a service known as Prevention Assistance. Cash assistance is offered for qualified clients to help them pay their mortgage or rent. Some funding may also be offered for utilities and/or cooling bills too. The goal is to try to prevent homelessness in Seminole County. Financial assistance may be provided one-time within a two-year period.

In addition to the public cash assistance, the financial aid will be also offered with short-term case management and social services for a period of 1-3 months maximum.  Several conditions are in place, including an applying household must have proof of the ability to sustain housing and show on-going management, and they must also have experienced a financial hardship or emergency.

Financial assistance for burial and cremation expenses is offered for very low income and indigent Seminole County Florida residents. Public assistance for cremation expenses may be provided for those who die and have no medical or health insurance, people who pass away and are unclaimed and/or are unknown individuals who die in Seminole County. Assistance with burial expenses may even be provided for those that own a plot in the county.

Dental expenses may qualify for aid. Applicants for this service will need to provide a written referral from a licensed dentist dated within the last 30 days. Various applications will need to be completed, and people need to also attend orientation. Dental assistance is limited to one time per year.

Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing was funded by the federal government. It can help people who are faced with an eviction pay their rent, security deposits, utilities, or even provide for moving costs. The goal is to try to limit, and ideally prevent, homelessness in Seminole County Florida.

Vision Care is even more limited in when it is offered. When funding allows, services are limited to eye glasses and exams. Applicants will need to provide a written referral from a licensed physician dated within the last 30 days.

State Housing and Initiative program (SHIP) is funded by the Florida Housing Finance Corporation. Government and public funds may be offered to assist very low, low, and moderate income homeowners and renters in Seminole County and across Florida. A number of services and resources are provided. Examples include programs for homeowners or potential and first time homeowners. For example, the organization may have information on foreclosure prevention or first time homebuyer grants and loans. The SHIP program may also have Purchase Assistance and Homeowner Rehabilitation Loans or Grants.

The Department of Community Affairs provides funds and social services for low-income households. Resources can help people attain the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to achieve self sufficiency over the long term. The non-profit agency provides the working poor in Seminole County with a variety of antipoverty services. Seminole County provides a Job Training program, a Day Camp Scholarship program, as well as a Self-Sufficiency program.

Applicants will need to complete an application for financial assistance. Many income thresholds will need to be met, and all public assistance of course is limited and depends on current funding in Seminole County. Applicants will need to attend workshops or an orientation too.
