Help from food, seasonal, and non-financial programs

The Rockdale Emergency Relief Fund Holiday Store and Thanksgiving Meal Programs provided hundreds of individuals with free Christmas gifts to give to their family members. It also furnishes the families that qualify with turkeys and everything else needed to prepare a traditional meal for Thanksgiving.

When it comes to Christmas help, the center is set up so that clients are able to shop and select gifts at no charge to them. There may also be free gift cards for purchasing a turkey, milk, butter, eggs, bacon, and orange juice during the holidays or free turkey coupons for shopping at your local grocery store. The services will also give family's from Rockdale County the opportunity to enjoy spending that quality time together during the holidays.

Rockdale Emergency Relief Fund (RER) uses donations and they always need additional items to fill the shelves for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many local businesses, such as Publix, also have stepped up to contribute. Anyone can help the agency make the holidays a little brighter and make a difference in the lives of families and seniors in need or in crisis by making their holidays bright. People can filling and donate toys or meal boxes; make a small, one time financial contribution, or volunteer to assist with box distribution.

Using donations from stores such as Publix as well as Wal-Mart, and also based on contributions from the community, the RER food pantry is available for a crisis. There are of course groceries given out from the center, but other items can be provided too, such as household supplies.

During certain periods of time, the pantry may also pass out clothing to clients. Or there may be furniture, small used appliances, or snacks served to the homeless. The pantry is a clearinghouse operation for feeding families living in poverty and also providing them with other goods.

RER resources for paying bills and rent

For residents that have taken all of the proper steps, and that are out of options, there may be emergency financial help for certain needs. However Rockdale Emergency Relief Fund has limited funds and various restrictions in place around this.

As examples, the customer should first have tried to work or a payment plan with your utility company or landlord before applying for rent or energy bill help. The crisis must be verifiable, so proof of expenses, income and more is required. The applicant should explore utility programs such as balance billing or those from the government, such as LIHEAP.

After all the steps have been met, then only then may RER even consider providing grants. There may be money for damage deposits, rent, utility or water bills, medical expenses, transportation, medications and other critical needs. The person also needs to have implemented financial plans so that  the person will not be seeking help again weeks down the road.

For the uninsured or vulnerable (such as disabled or indigent), these families and individuals struggling with health care costs have Medicaid available to them in Rockdale County. If an interested party is currently enrolled in one of the state of Georgia or federal health insurance programs, Medicare or Medicaid, there may be even be additional financial assistance available to help with prescription costs.

Applications need to be completed and mailed during the enrollment period. In some cases the process will require a face to face interview, but this is always not necessary.

Job programs from Rockdale Emergency Relief Fund allow participants to gain skills and knowledge necessary to obtain employment. There are also WIA centers in the Conyers Georgia community that help clients with the selection of appropriate interview and work attire. Topics include workplace etiquette, goal setting, interpersonal communication, and ways to overcome barriers to employment, such as lack of affordable childcare or transportation.

The program/outreach service is for people on welfare along with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients. The under or unemployed also get help, and the agency will assist with a transition from welfare into the workforce.  Individuals also participate in community or volunteer service activities as a part of the job programs.

The Rockdale Emergency Relief Fund in based in Conyers. However the organization will try to assist people from across the county, provided resources are available. The address is 350 Tall Oaks Dr., Conyers, Georgia 30013. Call (770) 922-0165, which is the main intake number.
