Help from Salvation Army in Roanoke County.

Roanoke County Salvation Army programs can help families keep their lights on, assist with housing costs, and offer free food to the hungry. All of these social services, as well as the assistance given at Christmas and programs for seniors, are key to offer emergency help in the region.

The short term financial aid is also combined with case management, such as Turning Point for victims of domestic violence, the Red Shield Lodge as well as a number of job placement services. All of these resources are combined to keep people housed as well as to break the cycle of poverty, homelessness, and hunger in Roanoke County.

Salvation Army Family Emergency Services of Roanoke County is used to provide cash grants and/or loans for paying bills. Or there may be a free box of canned food giving to feed the family. There are a few donation type services used for paying utility and heating bills. They include Wood Heat as well as Heat Share. Funds can pay for heating oil, propane, wood pellets, and other fuel bills. Or the financial aid is often combined with other services in Roanoke County, such as the food or maybe an article of clothing.

Housing costs can also be paid by Salvation Army Family Emergency Services. If a landlord is evicted a tenant due to unpaid rent, then some money can help with that need. There is also mortgage payment, security deposit, and other funds for paying rent available. Dial (540) 343-5335 for information on financial aid, but be prepared to have proof, a source of income, and the crisis needs to be one time only. Or find additional ways to get help for low income families.

Stability can include Salvation Army services such as Red Shield Lodge. This is a combination shelter as well as transitional housing service. It touches upon all parts of homelessness and as well as poverty. The social workers provide tools for employment, referrals to low income housing, and budgeting advice.

The case management is done in multiple stages. In order to participate, the client needs to agree to volunteering at least 20 hours per week. This will help them gain skills (including work) which are critical to stability. The Roanoke County Salvation Army will also require that the Individual Service Plan continue to be followed during this process.

Women or children that are domestic violence survivors can benefit from the Roanoke County Salvation Army Turning Point. It combines everything from housing to food, legal aid, and general stability. Everything that is needed to keep the women or child safe is done. When the time is right, the church will also refer the client to financial aid to move, such as funds for rent, car programs, and other aid.

Angel Tree is the free Christmas toy program. The Salvation Army runs it for the communities of the City of Roanoke, City of Salem, Town of Vinton and Botetourt, and the entire Roanoke County region. Children and infants under the age of 13 can apply for Christmas gifts, ranging from games to clothing, shoes, tablets, and much more.

Senior care is also arranged in Roanoke Valley. It gives people the fellowship they need, at the same time as a meal or recreational activity. Youth programs from the Salvation Army are also available. This encompasses everything from mentoring to free back to school supplies, leadership skills, holiday parties, and a general ministry from the church.

There is also a Family Store for residents of Roanoke County. The Salvation Army provides many items for sale, including clothing, furniture, beds, couches, and other items. While the items are sold for a low price, there may be some instances in which a voucher can provide free goods, such as when a disaster strikes.

The main administrative office of the church is at 724 Dale Avenue, SE, Roanoke, Virginia. For information on their Family Emergency Services or any other service available, dial 540-343-5335.
