Across the state of Rhode Island there are a number of charities that that provide help at Christmas and other key holidays, such as Thanksgiving. Many of the agencies are located in the Providence County area, but assistance is available in all portions of the state. The programs range from free toys from Adopt a Family to several places to turn to for a free holiday meal or gift card.
The primary organizations to register for are below. Each relies on donations from the public, so not every non-profit can offer a gift or food basket. But when the programs are fully funded, what a client may be able to obtain ranges from a toy or game for a child, a hot turkey meal during Thanksgiving, and Christmas food baskets. The application period starts early and any support is usually provided on a first come and served basis to income qualified families in Rhode Island.
Most of the organizations also focus on just residents of that town or city. Several just provide food or a meal as well. So there are many restrictions and some charities will not have enough resources to help all needy families at Christmas.
