Find help with utility bills and rent

The Polk County Salvation Army has a major operation that provides assistance to families in the Winter Haven and Lake Wales areas of Florida. However, the Salvation Army is also running low on funds to distribute to those in need, and is itself  in need of help and donations from people if it is going to continue helping those in need.

The Salvation Army helps local people with paying both their rent and utility bills. They also offer a variety of other assistance to those in need. They have a food assistance program available Monday through Friday, they provide disaster services and also collaborate with the Red Cross to manage their assistance programs. Some of the other services provided include they offer Sunday school and church services, a youth program, a music program, summer camp, free holiday and Christmas toys, vacation Bible school, Thanksgiving food, and more. The Catholic Charities of Central Florida, which is based in Lakeland but services the entire county, also runs various assistance programs. They offer what is known as an Emergency Assistance Program that provides crisis and emergency services for low income and other clients in need of urgent basic human needs. Clients are received by appointment only, so call first. Some of the resources provided to individuals includes emergency financial assistance for paying bills and housing expenses, referrals, information on Florida and federal government programs, advocacy, food pantry distribution, and in some cases provide short-term case management services to qualified individuals. 863-686-7153.

Another charity that may be able to help is Talbot House Ministries. They are the most Comprehensive Care Center for the Low Income, Poor and Homeless in the Lakeland and Polk County community. Dial 863-687-8475.

 

 

 

 

Family Emergency Services of Winter Haven - Programs that provide cash grants and financial assistance for people and families who are unable to pay their utility bills or which offer special services which support people's ability to make their payments. Call (863) 294-1939

Frostproof Care Center - Helps low to moderate income people in time of crisis or emergency with paying rent, mortgage, cooling or utility bill assistance. Also provides help with paying for minor medical expenses of people in emergency situations. (863) 635-5555

Hardee Help Center of Wauchula Florida - Provides services and financial assistance to those in an emergency or crisis. Services and help provided are limited to once during a twelve month period. Dial (863) 773-0034. Find additional ways to get help paying rent.

Lake Wales Care Center - The agency may be able to offer temporary financial assistance for rent payments and mortgage help. Funding may also take care of utilities. Programs are targeted at individuals and families during time of crisis. Lake Wales Florida. (863) 676-6678

Polk County Social Services, which is located in Bartow, runs assistance programs including Polk Health Care Plan, Primary care Program, limited financial assistance for rent, shelter, utilities, food, and transportation. (863) 534-5387

St. Vincent DePaul - Running through the Ministry of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, the agency provides assistance with free food, rent costs, and utilities to families and individuals during time of crisis or a financial hardship. Lakeland FL. (863) 644-7469

Foreclosure mediation and assistance

The local court system has implemented a mediation program for Polk County homeowners. This session will allow the homeowner to meet one on one with  a professional mediator to find a solution to the their mortgage and housing concerns. Learn more.

Call the Heart of Florida Legal Aid Society, Inc. at 863-519-5663 to learn about legal assistance programs. Get help with a variety of civil legal issues, including domestic violence, landlord and tenant issues, possible foreclosure aid, and consumer and debt issues.

Free medical care in Polk County

The uninsured of Polk County Florida can receive access to high quality health and medical care from Lakeland Volunteers In Medicine (LVIM). The non-profit organization is an all volunteer-run medical clinic. The objective of the facility is to provide free, high quality medical and health care to the low income, working uninsured individuals and families who live in Polk County. It is a fairly large and robust organization, as right now LVIM currently has over 400 medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, and lay volunteers who donate their time to providing free health care services. Highland Stay Well Clinic (Sebring Florida (863) 382-1234) is a free community clinic that provide basic medical care including physical examinations, family planning, immunizations, nutrition assistance, check ups, and diagnosis and treatment of common ailments.
