All of the pharmaceutical companies offer this form of financial help to the less fortunate. Many Americans receive help with paying for the prescription drugs they through their private health insurance or government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. For many people who lack coverage, or that have a low income, the free Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) will help them get free medications, vouchers, or even coupons. Most brand-name as well as generic drugs are covered.

What is a PAP - Patient Assistance Program

Pharmaceutical companies offer this form of assistance to the low-income, uninsured, the unemployed as well as people on Medicaid or Medicare. Note each drug company may refer to their Patient Assistance Programs by a different name, but they all do the same thing; either give or free or cheap medications to lower income households. There will be insulin, ADHD medication, anti-depressants, statins, blood pressure and many other medications covered by a patient assistance programm

  • GSKForYou is the name of the Glaxo (GSK) patient assistance program
  • NovoCare is the Novo Nordisk program
  • Lilly Care is the patient assistance program from Eli Lilly
  • The Merck PAP is known as Merck Patient Assistance Program
  • Sanofi, a major insulin provider, has a patient assistance program known as Sanofi Patient Connection.

A Patient Assistance Program will also help a household that is enrolled into Medicaid or that lives on SSI disability. There is also support for the uninsured, unemployed or sick that need a life-saving medicine to treat their medical condition. Some of the Patient Programs also cover conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, give financial help or free vouchers to pay for insulin, and address many other conditions.

The operation, benefits and requirements to enroll into, and apply for each company's PAP differ. In general, applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents who fall below a specific household income level and who do not have prescription insurance coverage. However, some companies will offer assistance to persons who have insurance or Medicare Part D prescription coverage if specific hardship requirements are met or if a medication's cost is not covered by insurance.

The enrollment process differs by drug company. Most require an application to be completed online or in writing by a patient and health care provider. You may be required to submit a copy of a prescription or a letter from a doctor regarding your health condition and need for the medicine.

PAPs offer differing levels of financial assistance or free medications based on income. For example, if annual income falls below $40,000, a drug may be provided for free, but if income is just under $70,000, an applicant might receive a 75% discount. As noted, each pharmaceutical company has different terms and conditions.

Assistance for a prescription is provided in varying ways. Some pharmaceutical company assistance programs reimburse enrollees who submit a receipt for a drug purchase. Others provide coupons, or have patients download as app, that can be redeemed at a pharmacy. A PAP may have a relationship with a specific pharmacy where a discount will be applied at the time of purchase. Some PAPs will ship drugs directly to the patient's home or to that person's health care provider.

There is no charge for applying to a Patient Assistance Program. Some third-party organizations, not affiliated with the drug companies, charge a small fee to assist persons with their applications. While most people should be able to prepare and submit an application on their own, for some seniors or persons with disabilities, paying a small fee for assistance may prove beneficial.

How to apply for a patient assistance program from a drug company

The assistance from a drug company can often be combined with other financial help, such as from the government or a non-profit organization. Or look into specific help for diabetics, including subscription plans, patient assistance programs or discounted insulin plans.

1) See if the patient qualifies for free or discounted prescription drugs from the program. As noted, income, asset and/or insurance criteria will often need to be met. People can inquire into the programs by calling a pharmaceutical company or ask their doctor or local pharmacist about any PAPs out there. This can also be done online or by calling one of the customer service numbers for the pharmaceutical company.

2) If the patient qualifies, they will then need to determine if the medications they need are covered. As each pharmaceutical company offers their type of medications, drugs and more.
