Orange, Dutchess, and Rockland County free holiday assistance programs.

The Rockland, Orange, and Dutchess County regions have several holiday assistance programs available. There is either Christmas and/or Thanksgiving help available at a number of places, as well as free Toys for Tots. Churches may serve free hot meals, food pantries may provide a box of groceries for the holidays, and Adopt a family and Angel Tree programs disburse free Christmas toys, games, and gifts.

Each of the charities or non-profits listed below focuses on just the county or town in question. Low income families that are applying to a free holiday assistance programs need to call on an organization near where they live, whether it is Dutchess, Rockland, or Orange County. What may be provided by each agency will differ too, and may be toys for kids, Christmas gifts, boxes of food, or other appropriate holiday gifts. Or additional Dutchess County holiday assistance is also available

Toys for Tots Distribution Sites
All of these are part of the national, Marine Corps organized Toys for Tots programs. New, unwrapped gifts (that are donated and packed by volunteers) are given to kids for Christmas.

Community-Based Services

There are three main services. The non-profit runs a free adopt-a-family program. It gives out free winter coats, gifts at Christmas, and more. There is also a Christmas and Thanksgiving food basket service.

Salvation Army Centers
There are several around the region, including in Rockland and Orange Counties. Each of them will focus on their own town/city. The application periods usually open in November or October, and are limited. The free Christmas programs (including Angel tree) often give out gifts, toys, games, books, and much more. Many also have soup kitchens for meals.

Both Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas food baskets are provided. There will be toys, games, gifts, and other items. The kids (and their parents) need to between the ages of 5 and 16.

During the holidays (Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas) there will be assistance given out. Supplies may be canned juice, potatoes, turkey, stuffing mix, soup, macaroni, cereal, pasta, bread and cheese and spaghetti. Much more may be served at no cost as well.
