Government job training, placement, and career programs
Programs are committed to building a strong workforce in across the state. A number of employment services are offered in an effort to do this. The Career Centers is the best place to contact for the following.
- Register for vocational education, training, and job skill programs. These can also offer very important work experience to candidates. Get an RN, find training for a marketing degree, or get trained for free trade school careers in NY such as plumbing, electrician, carpentry, roofing and more.
- High quality employment programming is offered. Clients will need to first go through an Employability Assessment.
- Job Readiness Training will benefit both the client and any potential employer in New York.
- Counselors will work with individuals, including the currently unemployed, youth, and seniors on job development and placement services.
- Support including government benefits and assistance may be applied for, including childcare, transportation, tools, and more.
- Many residents of New York take second, third (or even primary) jobs as freelancers or gig workers.There are apps and non-profits focused on giving them help, and find gig worker assistance programs.
- Even after starting a new job, post employment support, coaching, and transitional benefits are available.

Cash assistance from job programs in New York
New York State also provides free grants for retraining or job placement. The Department of Human Services, OTDA, non-profits and the Career Centers locations provide financial help for employment needs, such as gas, car repairs or clothes. This will help pay for employment initiatives to help ease the burden for businesses hiring new employees. Some of the main resources funded are below.
TANF cash assistance is New York is a financial assistance program formerly known as welfare to work. There are funds to pay the bills while the under or unemployed person trainings for and gets a job. New York will coordinate various employment programs while giving help. There is money for transportation, licenses, fees and more, or look here for financial help paying for a driver license.
Families that currently are enrolled into the TANF / Temporary Assistance to Needy Families are required to take on this responsibility for supporting themselves and their families. This is done as cash assistance programs from TANF are time limited. This includes they will need to find and engage in meaningful employment. New York state will also try to address other financial needs of the unemployed. Cash assistance is offered of course, but many income qualified residents can also get medical care, transportation assistance, a free computer or cell phone for work and other financial help. Help for careers and training from the state of New York
Government Career Centers provide a number of services. They help people with no GED, college graduates, seniors re-entering the workforce and others. There are also vocational programs for the disabled, veteran retraining in NY, and trade school programs for youth or adults.
The first step is job search and readiness. Tests will be taken to see what your current skills set is and what type of role you may qualify for. Then work with a career center or Workforce specialist on searching for a job. This can include using the internet, public databases, and visiting local employers. Whether getting a medical or IT carer, or free adult GED, or a job at a semi-conductor or internet company, programs are offered.
Job placement will include getting the recipient into the position. Enhance your interview skills, obtain professional work attire including free clothes or uniforms, and go over proper etiquette that may be expected at the company. The objective is to create numerous employment opportunities and a workforce ready to fill any positions.
Retention is key. Just landing a job is not enough. People need to keep it. A counselor will work with the employee on sustainability and provide ongoing case management and support. It does not do the state of New York or employee any good if they are shortly laid off or fired from the new role.
Skills enhancement is offered throughout this entire process. This can include an internship at an employer in New York, computer training, GED or going back to school. The Career centers help immigrants or migrants find a job, take ESL classes and give other support. Having an education and skills are critical to long term success and an increased income level.
Transitional Employment Assistance Program, or TEAP, is a form of On-the-Job Training. A number of companies participate. It was created in an effort to offset the cost of hiring and training a new employee. Qualified employers may be reimbursed up to 50% of the new hire’s wages for up three months. Another grant is for Transitional Jobs. This will help ensure all applicants are well trained and qualified for the job in question.
Veterans in NYS can get retraining. In fact, they are a focus. New York is proud to offer Priority of Service to veterans and their eligible spouses. Residents that have served in the military will be served first by the next available staff member or career counselor. In addition, they will get first priority when it comes to applying for open jobs and any training for which they are eligible and qualified for. - Sign up for skills assessment and explore training options.
- Get an adult GED or certification at a technical, or trade school, to be an electrician, roofer, plumber, HVAC tech or any other type of career.
- Get help in preparing a resume and searching for a job.
- Counselors can even call businesses on your behalf or provide referrals for veteran's support services that are provided by New York or the federal government.
The Workforce Center also offers free general job training and education. This can help clients that are thinking of earning a HS Diploma or GED or going back to school. Assistance is also offered for people who need specialized training or are considering starting a brand new career.
The first step of this process usually involves career counseling and an assessment. The specialist who work at the centers need to see what the individual is interested in and what type of role their background and experience supports. Career counseling will also set long term goals for the client.
The training available can cover a number of topics. Certificates can be obtained for more technical roles. Many Workforce Centers in New York provide free basic computer training and information on college scholarships. The curriculum will be designed based on someone’s experience or existing skillset. Staff members can offer referrals or families who are low income may be able to also find laptops to use for free for job programs.
Free federal government sponsored job training resources
New York fully supports and participates in the federal government The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. This is a main resource that supports training and employment services for dislocated workers and unemployed adults. This is offered in partnership with the New York Governor's Workforce Development Council, countless local employment and training organizations and other non-profits. The One-Stop Career Centers are the best place to call to learn more.
Some of these WIOA programs are age specific as well. With the population in New York continuing to age, many individuals over the age of 55 are looking to renter the workforce so they can continue to pay the bills. So the New York Senior Community Service Employment can help residents accomplish this goal. Many of the positions available may even be part time.
The youth in New York also need experience in order to enter the workforce. Workers under the age of 21 may qualify for internships or special training in workshops and other sessions. There are also free trade school in NY for them, with training from everything from being a chef to computer technician as well as gig jobs such as playing games or bing a developer. This will hopefully lead to a full time job for them, and learn more on games to win real money.
The disabled in New York can also get employment assistance from government programs, including the The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. This includes personal support in navigating the system and vocational training opportunities. They can receive free career guidance at a Workforce Center and learn about options such as the ADA.
