Find free clothes, back to school supplies, diapers, kitchen supplies, furniture and household or personal stuff in New Haven County. Charities, churches and non-profits provide items to low-income families, college students and seniors. Locate a free clothing closet or furniture bank near you in New Haven CT.

Bargain items are also offered. Families of all income levels and backgrounds can also shop at the local thrift stores for gently used items. Or get free items or vouchers from furniture banks or clothing closets. The centers may provide free items, including school supplies or regular clothes, beds or couches, appliances, laptop or computers and winter coats. Some centers offer seasonal resources as well. This can include birthday gifts, uniforms, shoes and other back to school supplies as well as gifts for children. However these types of programs are not as common. Most of the non-profits in New Haven will have more basic goods such as winter coats, general clothing, shoes, boots, and items for work or a job interview. The goal is to ensure kids and adults are warm and well cared for throughout the year.

Yes, the hospital has an on site thrift shop. It sells to the general public clothing, household goods and toys. Clothing and other household supplies may be offered for individuals with a referral from a New Haven based social service agency. Some medical equipment too for people on Medicaid or a low-income.

Social Services by town
Each local municipality gives out free school supplies to kids from the town only. Or there are vouchers, free gift cards to use at stores such as Walmart and more. Some programs run year round while others are just during the summer.

The non-profit mostly focuses on women and children, including single mothers. There is free furniture for a home or apartment. Based on donations, New Haven families can get desks, kitchen pots and pans, lamps, beds, mattresses, cribs, living room sets and much more. The furniture bank has gently used items. A low cost or free furniture bank is at the charity too with free stuff. Vouchers may be offered for the very low income. Low income elementary, middle and high school students can get free assistance as well, including books, shoes, belts, and other goods. Several emergency assistance, social services, and other resources are offered. A clothing closet/thrift store will have free clothes, household items, and furniture. Other programs include free back to school supplies, the Angel Tree holiday assistance, and funds for paying for basic needs such as rent or heating bills.
