Assistance from Neighborhood House of Calexico.

The Neighborhood House of Calexico may be able to provide short term, emergency financial aid for rent or bills as well as ongoing support such as literacy programs. The non-profit is focused on helping low income families in the greater Imperial County area, and many different services are administered in an effort to make this happen.

The financial support is from the Emergency Assistance Program, and this is an option for struggling and disadvantaged families that are in the midst of a situational crisis. There are times when people need help in accessing food, clothing, rent or utility bill assistance, and the Neighborhood House may be able to assist, and this may even include loans.

In addition, these residents may need help filling out the appropriate forms or translating correspondence into the English language. The Emergency Assistance Program is available due to the tireless time, fund raising efforts and dedication of volunteers.

The Neighborhood House Shelter provides accommodations for vulnerable homeless women and children in the community. The shelter provides them with their basic daily requirements such as a free hot meal, room, food and clothing. In addition, women or their children have an opportunity to have intensive case management which will help them return to a safe, stable, independent life and find permanent housing in Imperial County.

The program is based on an assessment being completed of each person’s needs and concerns. The main goals for the clients is to find them permanent, safe apartments or homes in Imperial County. Another key goal is on increasing self-esteem and self-reliance to avoid homelessness in the future. The Neighborhood House Shelter is funded and supported by the United Methodist Women, community donations and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

A Pre-School and Family Literacy service is available as a program that is designed to serve children ages 3 to 5 years who come from impoverished and disadvantaged households. Its goal is to prepare the children for a successful and seamless entry into the school system by focusing on language and literacy skills.

Another key aspect of the program is promoting parental interest in their child’s education, addressing nutritional needs, encouraging reading together and offering skilled activities for both the parent and child to engage in together. There are two locations for the Pre-School program, and they include 701 Preston Dr. and also 506 Fourth Street.

The activities promoted as well as taught at the Pre-School programs are in accordance with standard requirements designated by the state of California Desired Results Program. The activities are hands-on with the understanding the children that are students of the service will learn from their own unique experiences. These services are also subsidized using grants from the California Department of Education, Child Development Division.

There is a Neighborhood House of Calexico Mission Thrift Store available. It is for the general public as well as low-income or unemployed households in the Imperial County community. The location is at 299 W State Street in El Centro. The main focus of the store is to offer household items and clothing at a steeply discounted rate for vulnerable individuals and families residing in the community.

Supportive business services is available through the Micro Business Center. These resources are available for residents of Imperial County who presently own a business or want to start one that helps struggling, disadvantaged, individuals. There is also an emphasis on supporting people who are trying to put the unemployed back to work.

Services available from the center for eligible clients includes assistance with receiving a business license, one on one business consultations, referrals to loans and financing, training and workshops, and fictitious name statement. In addition, other services from Neighborhood House include e-commerce web development, bookkeeping, technology assistance and help with internet sales.

The main location of Neighborhood House is at 506 E. 4th St., Calexico, California 92231. Call the charity at (760) 357-6875 for more details.
