Salvation Army assistance programs Minneapolis and Hennepin County.

Caseworkers from Salvation Army centers in Minneapolis Minnesota area can offer help or referrals to low income families, fixed-income seniors, and persons with disabilities, among others. This can include free vouchers for gasoline or a hotel, money for rent or electric bills, free food for struggling households and other aid.

A number of crisis and emergency financial assistance programs are available from the Minneapolis Salvation Army as indicated below. People can also get advice, support, and even possibly direct financial help for rent, basic needs, medications and bills. Or seasonal resources include free Thanksgiving turkey dinners, Christmas toys from Angel Tree, as well as back to school supply drives.

Emergency, short term financial help in Hennepin County

HeatShare is a Salvation Army program that is not run or funded by the government. This heating/utility bill assistance program was created in order to help people who live on a fixed income, pension, or disability check. Low income who have had an unexpected crisis with energy bills, such as a shut off, may qualify for help from the Minneapolis HeatShare program. Energy conservation education is also offered to participants, and learn about resources such as weatherization.

Receive self-sufficiency from FreshStart. This is a seminar on money management and budgeting for persons with long-term difficulties paying their heating and utility bills. The seminar runs for a total of 6 weeks. Participants who complete the FreshStart class will still need to make monthly payments on their utilities. In addition, they will need to create, follow and maintain a monthly budget. If people take these steps, and other required actions, then clients may be eligible for up to a $750 grant towards paying their energy costs.

Household and material goods may be offered. Services are limited by availability, but can include vouchers for clothing. Single adults receive a voucher to the Salvation Army Thrift Store once every 12 months, in which they can pick out coats or work attire. Families of qualified applicants can receive a referral to the Silver Angel Thrift Store once every 6 months.

As everyone knows, furniture is not free. Vouchers are given to assist Minneapolis residents with the purchase of household products including furniture. All items will be offered to qualified individuals at a discount price at the Thrift Stores. Clients will need to prove that they have recently left a shelter, are faced with a crisis, or that they must have a new living situation due to reasons such as domestic violence. They can do this by working with a pastor, case worker, pastor, landlord, etc. Vouchers are capped at $100 per family and cannot be used to pay for beds.

Other items include baby items such as diapers, which are available to single parents, moms, and others who are in crisis situations. Baby supplies are distributed up to 4 times a year, and certain programs may limit aid to one can of formula per baby per month. Personal hygiene products are available as well, and the distribution of them will vary. Clients may receive products at most once a month.

As part of material goods assistance is the free school supply programs for students from kindergarten to high school age. Notebooks, backpacks, shoes, books, computers, and many other goods are passed out to qualified families. Immigrants and non-English speakers can also get school items.

Christmas and free holiday programs provide gifts, toys, and other items for children 14 and under as well as food assistance. Some of the programs available include Adopt-a-Family program and the Phone Home Project, which provides free long distance phone calls during Thanksgiving/Christmas season. Meals, food, and Thanksgiving Baskets are available at limited Salvation Army locations in Minneapolis and Hennepin County.

Transportation assistance is offered at most once per year. The applicant will need to have a medical appointment or a permanent job for which they have not received their first paycheck. The caseworker from the Salvation Army will need to be able to verify that the client meets all conditions. If the person needs transportation for a job, the applicant will need to bring a letter (on company letterhead) stating when they started working at the position and when they will get their first paycheck. If someone needs a ride to a doctor appointment, then the client will need to bring confirmation from the hospital/clinic/doctor of the medical appointment.
