How to get help paying bills, rent, and other expenses

Two local organizations have received additional government funds that will be used to provide assistance. The Jewish Renaissance Foundation of Perth Amboy and the Puerto Rican Action Board, Inc. of New Brunswick are the community action agencies for Middlesex County New Jersey.

Both of these are newly designated community action agencies, and the non profits were also able to get a one-shot infusion of revenue from the federal stimulus package. The Puerto Rican Action Board got about $900,000 in funds, and The Jewish Renaissance Foundation got about $800,000 in stimulus funding. The funding will allow both groups to greatly increase the amount of assistance they can provide to local families.

A spokesperson from the Jewish Renaissance Foundation said that the additional funding will, among other things, allow the organization to establish child-care facilities. In addition, they will have a mobile dental clinic visit towns in conjunction with the Jewish Renaissance Medical Center that will provide people with free or discounted dental care.

New Jersey has designated the Jewish Renaissance Foundation to serve as the community action agency for the Middlesex County East region, which includes Carteret, Edison, Metuchen, Perth Amboy, Sayreville, South Amboy, Woodbridge and Highland Park.

The Puerto Rican Action Board Inc. will allow the organization to greatly expand upon an already broad range of assistance services offered. They can now provide emergency assistance program targeted for food and housing. In addition, the agency's food pantry will be expanded while a new assistance program will be created to provide emergency assistance for rental, monthly mortgage payments, and heating payments for families who may be either in jeopardy of losing their homes or who are without adequate heat or utility services.

The Puerto Rican Action Board has been named as the charity agency for Middlesex County West serving people from Cranbury, Dunellen, East Brunswick, Helmetta, Jamesburg, Middlesex Borough, Milltown, Monroe, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Old Bridge, Piscataway, South Brunswick, Plainsboro, South Plainfield, South River and Spotswood.

Catholic Charities Diocese of Metuchen provides qualified individuals and families with assistance with the following expenses: Rent or Mortgage, Security Deposits, Utility and Heating bills, and First Month Rent. Dial (732) 826 - 6278.

New Brunswick based Middlesex County Board of Social Services offers housing help for those facing an eviction, or who are currently homeless. The agency may pay for temporary emergency shelter, back rent, offer funds for security deposits or provide money for utility and heating bill payments. Phone (732) 324 - 5500.

Be sure to contact Salvation Army, Morristown Corps at (973) 539 - 2700. The agency provides short-term, non-permanent emergency and financial assistance for bills. Some of the aid includes food, and utility and rental assistance, funds for first months rent to families, individuals, and groups unable to provide such services for themselves. The agency also participates in NJ Shares. Towns served include Cedar Knolls, East Hanover, Jefferson Township, Morris Plains, Mount Freedom, New Brunswick, Parsippany, Convent Station, Green Village, Ironia, Mendham, Morristown, New Vernon, Whippany.

South Plainfield Social Services provides food pantry, emergency prescription, housing help, heating and utility bill assistance (limited funding) and emergency motel placements (in case of fire) when funding is available. Some clothing is also available to those in need. They also offer holiday food and assistance around Christmas and Thanksgiving. Housing Coalition Of Central Jersey - This non-profit organizations help the low to moderate income obtain housing. It is a HUD certified agency, and can deal with a variety of housing issues, such as rent assistance, mortgages, foreclosure, and landlord / tenant concerns. New Brunswick 732-249-9700

Middlesex County programs that are available across New Jersey

Residents of New Brunswick and the greater Middlesex County New Jersey area can turn to other statewide assistance programs for help. Get rent assistance, free foreclosure counseling, funds for energy bills, and other financial aid.

Debt, foreclosure, and mortgage counseling

There are several HUD approved agencies that can provide foreclosure assistance to Middlesex homeowners, and credit counselors that operate in the county. The various options and agencies include those listed below, or find more non-profit Middlesex credit counseling agencies.

NJ Citizen Action - Free credit counseling is offered to low to moderate income individuals. (800) 656 - 9637.

Family Guidance Center Corporation ((609) 586 - 2574) is an agency that offers bi-lingual individual and family budget counseling to reduce or eliminate debt. They also offer foreclosure prevention programs. Counselors will negotiates debt repayment plans in cooperation with creditors and mortgage servicers.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service - Offers foreclosure and mortgage assistance, as well as debt reduction programs to Middlesex County borrowers and homeowners. They also offer addition New Jersey mortgage programs, such as mortgage assistance pilot program. (888) 726 - 3260

 

 

 

Food pantries in Middlesex County

Abiding Peace Lutheran Church, which is located in Budd Lake, provides those families and individuals who lack the resources or money to purchase the basic food items to meet their nutritional needs. (973) 691 - 9393

Emanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church - New Brunswick. Offers food and various other assistance programs. (732) 545 - 2673

First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen. They have other locations in different towns. They offer emergency food at most once per month. Phone (732) 549 - 5101

Lazarus Project runs a pantry and soup kitchen. Various other services and counseling is available. Call them at (732) 254 - 0066.

Trinity Health Center - This facility is a general family practice health clinic that can provide free or low cost medical care. Also provides lab services and medication assistance to the low income and people with limited insurance. Perth Amboy. Phone (732) 826 - 9160

Eric B. Chandler Health Center - The clinic offers physical exams and check ups: basic preventive care including vaccinations, medications, Dermatology, dental assistance, immunizations, Pediatrics, and other medical care. Accepts government insurance, sliding fee scale services, and private insurance as well. Dial (732) 235 - 6700

Joseph S. Yewaisis Outpatient Center - The health care center offers patients in the area many medical, surgical and subspecialty programs (i.e. diabetes, internal medicine, orthopedics). Referrals are provided for medical care that is not offered. Social workers, medical bill advocates, and financial counselors can assist in solving the financial problems of patients and their families.
