Miami Dade area Salvation Army assistance programs.

Social services and emergency assistance is available from the Miami-Dade Salvation Army. The charity helps lower income families meet their basic needs by offering free stuff (food, meals, Christmas toys or school supplies); financial help for bills; case management and other support. The Chjristian church has provided free groceries, transitional housing, emergency rent/utilities, a Family Store in Miami and so called lodges or homeless shelters.

If the organization can’t meet your needs, they will often provide referrals to other local resources. Get information on federal or state government programs or other non-profits in Miami when the Salvation Army cannot provide the assistance you need.

Lodges are set up for women, families, and men. The Salvation Army has dozens of rooms around the region which can accommodate people of all backgrounds and genders, and they operate very similar to shelters. Some of the individuals who stay there may be single mothers with children and even fully intact families.

Centers and housing is also available for men as well, including veterans, transients, homeless, and undocumented individuals in Dade County Florida. Not only are people given a place to stay, but other services offered include tutoring, information on job training, and other support.

The Salvation Army Red Shield Lodge is a specialty short term housing unit. This site is available for homeless, recently evicted, low income, and persons dealing with HIV/AIDS who live in the Miami region. Helping Hands is yet another housing program, and this is for people who need more time to get settled into a new home or apartment. This includes new immigrants such as Latino or Hispanic members of the community or other Spanish speakers. People who have shown progress and are on the road to success, but require further time to improve their credit or save money, are prime candidates for the Helping Hands program. Emergency assistance is very limited and depends on funding. Salvation Army centers across Florida do their best to offer services including clothing, free food, utilities and/or financial assistance for paying rent. Some centers, and maybe the one in Miami, may be able to arrange transportation, provide prescription vouchers and other basic needs as resources allow. Or get information and referrals as needed.

Basically the Salvation Army in Florida as well as the city of Miami does its best to help meet basic emergency needs and offer comprehensive assistance programs. Assistance is available for Spanish speakers as well as Cubans too. One focus will always be on offering money to help pay rent or utilities, but it is limited. They also feed the poor and struggling from both a free food pantry as well as soup kitchen on site.
