Low income families with children as well as seniors have several charities in the Mecklenburg County region that they can contact for Christmas and other holiday assistance. While the focus is on children and the elderly in the community, others who are struggling may be able to get help as well, such as a hot meal, food basket, and similar goods.
Most of the holiday programs, such as those from the Salvation Army, operate based on the generosity of donations and people from the community. So as resources allow, some of what may be passed out during the holidays include free toys, gifts, shoes, games and toys.
Many of the organizations will also serve hot meals, especially at Thanksgiving or Christmas time. Very few restrictions are in place for a holiday food program. They may also pass out boxes of groceries or food items to families from the greater Charlotte region.
