Lucas County Ohio St. Vincent De Paul assistance programs.

A number of churches and volunteers are part of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul charity organization in Lucas County Ohio. The SVDP conferences offer various services to the working poor, low income, and less fortunate in the community.

Churches and their volunteers offer person to person service, financial assistance, and other support to people in the community. Some of what is offered includes free food or clothing. There is also emergency rent and mortgage assistance, utility bill payments, gently used furniture, prescription medicine, transportation, counseling and much more.

The Toledo and Lucas County Council of St. Vincent de Paul is one of the largest organizations in the country. Over 50 churches and SVdP conferences are part of the charity, and they also cover all of northwest Ohio. Other assistance and aid provided may include intervention, case management, consultation, or referrals if the St. Vincent can’t meet your needs.

Food assistance and meals are offered. Almost 100,000 hot meals are distributed per year to families and children in the community. Additional support is offered around the holidays. This can include turkeys at Thanksgiving, food baskets at Christmas, and other seasonal items and clothes. Thousands of struggling Toledo Ohio families benefit from these seasonal (and Thanksgiving) programs each year.

Food pantries can provide canned goods, meals, and other forms of sustenance to hundreds of hungry families per week. The pantries may have free food, paper goods, baby formula and diapers. Most of these items are obtained from donations from individuals and vendors, monthly Sunday collections, and regional food banks in Lucas County.

Basic goods and free household needs can be met. This includes clothing, housewares, appliances, and free furniture from Society of Saint Vincent parishes. Some items are sold by thrift stores, and others are provided for free to the needy.

Home visitation is offered by volunteers to those who are disabled or elderly. This is a free service. Volunteers from the Society churches will address the clients needs. Based on that, either free stuff or financial support is given.

St. Vincent De Paul emergency financial help for bills and basic needs

Information, referrals, and support is available for dealing with government agencies and non-governmental agencies, such as local non-profits in Toledo Ohio. Get help in applying for state of Ohio and federal government aid.

Transportation for job interviews, work, or doctor appointments in Lucas County may be available. This can include bus passes for people who need help securing transportation for those who don't own an automobile.

Medical bill assistance may even be offered. Limited amounts of financial help may be available to pay for healthcare costs. Get help with purchasing medicine for those who can't afford it, or maybe sign up for discount programs. However direct funds for paying medical bills is rare; rather referrals are often used. Or clients can learn about resources such as medical bill grants.

Counseling is offered. Speak to a volunteer and get a listening ear and get help arranging for professional counseling services. Social workers can also refer the needy to social service agencies and public resources that can provide in-depth assistance.

SVDP housing, utility, and “basic needs” can be addressed in the form of financial help. The parishes may offer free cash grants or low cost loans. Or they raise money from the Lucas County community for this financial assistance service. Direct financial assistance is available from that. This is very limited and often relies on donations from the community. Funds can help with one or more of the following.

  • Housing, including rent and mortgage payments. Counselors will also work directly with landlords and banks on mortgage or eviction prevention.
  • Utility payments may be offered to those facing a disconnection. Some money may be offered by Saint Vincent to utility companies and they will also try to make arrangements for past-due bills on your account.

SVDP works with volunteer doctors, dentists and mobile clinics to help the poor, uninsured, homeless and low income (among others). The resources can address basic dental or healthcare needs. Whether it is a basic dental check up, emergency oral surgery, family planning, primary care from a doctor, or something else, assistance is offered. Even find free dental clinics in Ohio.
