Public assistance and government benefits Kentucky DCBS and DHS.

Low-income families in Kentucky will get help from public assistance programs and government benefits. Find everything from cash assistance to SNAP food stamp applications, free Medicaid health insurance plans, job programs and other grant based aid. Most of the resources are provided by the Kentucky DCBS offices as well as Division of Family Support (DFS) in each local county. The DFS programs help low-income families, senior citizens, the unemployed, disabled adults and people with no money. The main government assistance programs include free money from Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (K-TAP), LIHEAP grants as well as SNAP food stamps along with an EBT card. There is also Medicaid and KCHIP health insurance, funeral help and more.

Free health care or insurance from Department for Community Based Services

KCHIP - Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program provides free or very low cost public health insurance coverage to uninsured or low-income children, including teenagers and newborn. This is a version of Medicaid in DFS. Patients can access free medications, basic medical care, and other assistance programs for paying health care bills.

The Kentucky Homecare Program helps adults who are unable to perform on their own with some activities of daily living. The program is for those who are at risk of institutional or hospital care. The state may be able to offer assistance so people can remain in their own homes, and they accomplish this goal by providing supportive services, emergency assistance and by also coordinating the help of provider agencies, family, and friends.

Kentucky public health care services are offered by the Division of Family Support. They include these services below.

  • Immunization and shots for older adults for common conditions.
  • If you need to get to a doctor appointment and can’t drive, pay for the gasoline, or have car troubles, then Medical Transportation may be facilitated by the state through local brokers and volunteers.

Prescription Drug Help. Save money by using a prescription drug discount card that is offered by Medicare. The discount card offered to Kentucky Medicare beneficiaries will provide a price reduction of 10 - 20 percent on their pharmaceutical medications.

Medicaid insurance from Division of Family Support is also available in the state. The federal government facilitated program can help the elderly and low income across Kentucky purchase quality healthcare and related medical services. There is also limited dental work from KY Medicaid, including cleanings and denture help. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), also known as LIHEAP, is a federal government funded public assistance program to help eligible low income households in Kentucky. KTAP is free money given from the DCFS benefit programs. Low-income families and those in poverty may be able to receive cash for basic needs from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), also known as Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program, or KTAP. Another similar benefits include the Kentucky Works Program (KWP), Family Alternatives Diversion (FAD) Program.

Funds can help pay for bills and basic needs in Kentucky such as utilities and rent. However applicants at a local DCBS (Department for Community Based Services office) need to commit to finding work and becoming self sufficient if they were to receive help from this public assistance program. Child Care and Support: The Kentucky Division of Child Care administers the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) to help Kentucky’s low- income and working poor families find affordable quality child care. In addition, Child Support Enforcement provides guidance and assistance to any person with a minor child who needs financial support from a noncustodial parent. Kentucky government benefits and assistanceAdult Day Care is offered by various hospital, non-profit agencies, and community-based group programs. The state partners with these organizations to provide social and related supportive services for older persons and senior citizens.

Caregiver resources and benefits

Kentucky KinCare Support Group. Tens of thousands of children across the state of Kentucky live with their grandparents or other senior relatives. So the KinCare public assistance program was created to assist grandparents and/or other relative caregivers. It will give them information on available services and emergency financial aid which will help them better function in their designated caregiver role. Case managers and social workers from the Division of Family Support will help families in identifying the needs that are going unmet because some resources and services are not being provided to children.

The federal government Older Americans Act established the National Family Caregivers Support Program to help families with their roles as caregivers. DCBS Employment resources for youth and adults in KY

Youths and the young across Kentucky can get support from a Youth Transition Progra from DFS. Resources help young people move from school to work, provide job training, help from move from pediatric to adult health care and from living at home to independent living. The group’s works closely with young people and their families to help them plan and prepare for the future.

Seniors can get help in finding Employment. Statewide programs serve persons 55 and older who are below 125 percent of the federal government poverty level. Programs and counselors can provide training, help with job placement, and subsidized employment.

Lower income families, the undereducated (or uneducated) and individuals living in poverty can apply for job retraining programs. This is often a requirement in order to get cash aid or public assistance in Kentucky.
