Residents of portions of Harris and nearby Montgomery can get help from Humble Area Assistance Ministries. The charity provides assistance in certain zip codes, as indicated below. Services are provided in English and Spanish, and some of what may be offered includes free food or clothing, eyeglasses, funds for utility bills or paying rent, and eyeglasses. HAAM also partners with other churches and charities to provide referrals to the needy and low income.

The region supported is as follows. Clients need to be from one of the following zip codes, and they include 77336, 77345, 77357, 77396, 77338, 77346, 77365, 77532, 77339, 77347, 77372, or 77044. Also, the organization relies on donations from the community, so resources are limited and applicants need to meet all conditions in place.

When seeking help, volunteers and other staff provide advice, assistance, and other aid in the form of a hand up and not a hand out. There is support for the very low income, working poor and moderate income individuals and families from the community that are in need. While maybe shelter (such as rent and housing) as well as food needs can be met, the goal is to help the individual attain long term success.

Using donations and government grants, Humble Area Assistance Ministries provides a number of social services. People from the Houston community will be assisted with their most pressing, basic needs to stabilize the situation and get them out of danger. Any help is one time, and is intended to resolve the emergency while the applicant deals with unemployment, a reduction in hours, or whatever caused the crisis. Some of what is available is as follows.

  • Emergency financial assistance for energy bills or paying rent.
  • ID Assistance for work reasons, including help with obtaining a birth certificate.
  • Clothing for work or school.
  • Medical care, including prescription drugs of eyeglasses.

Documentation is needed when seeking help from HAMM. They will require some or all of the following, and other requirements may be set too. Applicants need proof of address and zip code as indicated above. There needs to be income statements as well as copies of expenses, such as a lease or utility bills. Other information will be supporting info on the crisis and also Government or School Issued Picture ID.

The Humble Area Assistance Ministries Food Pantry and clothing center may have items such as canned meat, razors, free diapers, Cereal, Shampoo/Conditioner, Toothbrushes, Canned fruit, Pasta, Soup, Toothpaste, and more. So it is a combination of groceries and personal hygiene type items as well.

Clients will need to go through HAAM’s Self-Sufficiency program, and the intent of this is to build upon the stabilization that is needed for employment and other challenges. The non-profit offers services and advice that is designed to help clients build employment or so called life skills. Self-sufficiency also support an individual's desire to lessen and ultimately eliminate their dependence upon charities and other organizations in the region.

Through this service, clients of the agency are able to access the Harris County Job Center, which helps unemployed and underemployed persons improve job skills, find work, get a GED and seek advanced career opportunities.

The Job Center, which Humble Area Assistance Ministries is a partner of, provides one-on-one assistance from onsite staff as well as a group of trained volunteers who offer practical suggestions to employment problems. There are workshops on interview coaching and job search assistance as well as resume-building.

The employment center as well as self-sufficiency also offer Career Solutions, and this is done in partnership with Lone Star College. There will be assistance available for buying books and supplies as well as occasional tuition assistance for the classes themselves.

Other components of self-sufficiency include Certification courses, Life skills, Basic literacy, a free Computer lab, ESL classes, Interview coaching, referrals to Employment opportunities, financial literacy classes, and resume writing workshops.

The primary office of HAAM is at 1302 First Street, Humble, Texas 77338. This is where applicants and potential clients need to stop in at. Appointments are needed, and the phone is 281-446-3663.
