Assistance programs Herkimer County

Information on programs that assist people in need in the Mohawk Valley area as well as Herkimer County New York. Numerous organizations and group, including churches, charities and the government  help people pay their bills, provide advice, and help people make it through a difficult period. Resources ranging from free groceries from a pantry, gasoline, energy bill or rent help, and much more is given to qualified low income families.

Herkimer Community Action Agency financial assistance programs

The Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. is the agency to contact. A counselor can be reached at (315) 624-9930.

Rent and Homeless Intervention Program - This program will helps individuals and families find new housing, or prevent an eviction and keep them in their current housing. The rent program is offered for families who are facing a crisis and the program can assist them in maintaining a safe and suitable place to live. In addition, counselors provides case management to eligible families. For example, counselors can provide them with debt help, information on tenant landlord issues, mortgage advice, and other aid.

Low income energy bill HEAP assistance program - If you are one of the thousands of New York and Herkimer residents who can't afford to pay your home energy heating and energy bill, if your home may not be comfortable or safe, then you may be at risk of serious illness or injury and this program may be able to help you. The New York and federal government Home Energy Assistance Program assists low to moderate income households that pay a high proportion of their household income for home energy bills, and it provides help to them in primarily meeting their immediate home energy bills and needs.

The New York HEAP assistance program may be able to offer eligible families you one or more of the following types of assistance: weatherization and energy-related home repairs; furnace repairs; utility and heating bill payment assistance; energy crisis assistance and disconnection prevention.

Section 8 Rental Assistance - Another program that provides housing aid as well as subsidized rent help to those who need it most. More details on Section 8 low income subsidized housing vouchers.

 

 

 

Emergency Shelter Grants - Apply for and gain access to federal government grants that provide emergency rental assistance for either paying arrears or first month's rent. Payment is limited to at maximum one month’s rent payment. Unfortunately the grants and funds cannot be used to pay for security deposits.

Debt help - The agency can refer you to credit counselors to learn about credit repair programs, debt management, and the advantages and types of debt consolidation.

While resources in Herkimer County New York are limited, several other emergency assistance and case management type programs are offered by the MVCAA community action agency. Staff can offer referrals, advice, and more. Continue.

Non-profits and charities in Herkimer County

Some of the other assistance programs offered to people in need include those offered by the Herkimer Catholic Charities, including the Emergency Food Program, Runaway & Homeless Youth Program, Counseling Program, and possibly information or access to limited financial assistance programs. Free legal representation, advice, and consultations can be received from attorneys at the Legal Aid Society of Mid-York. Cal them at (315) 793-7000.

The Herkimer Salvation Army (phone (315) 866-1240) offers a Food Pantry. There is also emergency financial hep for bills or housing, case management, and a homeless shelter. Or get free Advice, Consultations, and possible grants or financial assistance.

The Salvation Army provides free stuff too, including seasonal items like winter clothes, school supplies, hot meals, or Christmas toys or gift cards. A low cost thrift store is on site too. Continue with Salvation Army Herkimer County assistance programs.
