Most of the food pantries for the city of Hilo and greater Hawaii County area are open limited hours. There are dozens of distribution centers located at non-profit organizations. Senior citizens, families facing a crisis, and struggling residents can contact one of these free food pantries for support.
Whether it is a church based group, or a local government agency, the goal is to provide healthy food. What may be provided ranges from non-perishable groceries to fruits, baby formula, vegetables, and surplus USDA commodities. Many centers offer other support as well. Some may even offer financial aid for paying certain expenses.
Since the food banks in the county of Hawaii tend to be smaller, they will normally only help people in the nearby area. For example, a charity in Hilo will generally only support local residents. But each pantry may offer referrals to those families facing an emergency.
