Hanover County Virginia assistance programs.

Low income families and the working poor can get short term or long term financial assistance in Hanover County. There are churches, charities, and government social services from Hanover County DSS. Find everything from funds to help with back rent or a mortgage to electric bill help or food (including free groceries or SNAP food stamps).

Households can also get free or low cost items, such as back to school supplies or free health or dental care. There is also counseling along with case management service, help in applying for public aid, or section 8 apartments. Other benefits range from free Christmas toys to furniture banks in the county as well as thrift stores.

Financial aid for paying bills and housing costs

Residents of the zip codes of 23047, 23059, 23005 or 23069 can call (A.C.E.S.), or the Ashland Christian Emergency Services, for help. Note that the family also needs to have a referral from the Department of Social Services first. The assistance available may be as follows.

Financial aid may be offered for housing type expenses. There may be grants from ACES for paying electricity bills, rent, security deposits, and even water costs. Some basic medical needs, namely for prescription medications, may also be addressed by issuing a voucher to pay for them.

As noted, contact the local DSS office first for a referral. But the address for Ashland Christian Emergency Services is 507-B Caroline Street, Ashland, VA 23005. The number is (804)798-2784.

Western Hanover Emergency Action Team covers the towns of Doswell, Montpelier, Beaverdam and Rockville only. Referrals are also needed. Residents can contact the Hanover County Social Services,  Capital Area on Aging, local churches, or even the fire department for a reference.

Hanover County Department of Social Services is located at 12304 Washington Highway in Ashland. This agency operates the government (both federal and state) benefit programs. These range from fuel or heating bills, applications to SNAP food stamps, section 8 housing vouchers, and more.

They also take part in EnergyShare, which is Dominion's main resource for low income households. Senior citizens and the disabled also are given priority for financial aid for their utilities. The office is in Ashland, Virginia 23005, and dial (804)365-4100 for intake.

A number of rental assistance and low cost housing programs are arranged. The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides vouchers. There are income subsidized private rent homes, senior supportive housing, as well as resources for migrant workers. Find details on what HUD offers.

A Salvation Army supports Hanover County. There is an outlet in Mechanicsville as well as nearby Richmond. Regional Catholic Charities – There is a food pantry open from Tuesday to Thursday until noon. It is recommended to call in advance to ensure that groceries are available. Children, single moms, and others can get free food, baby formula, diapers, and other aid. Phone (804)285-5986.

Legal Advice

Hanover County Legal Aid Society – There is staff that support the indigent and low income in Hanover County too. Call (804)648-1012. The firm only helps with civil legal matters – not criminal. There may be legal assistance is stopping debt collectors, eviction or foreclosure prevention, and matters such as accessing public aid. In some cases lawyers offer information to very low income seniors on home care or creating wills.

Sliding fee or low cost community clinics

Saint James the Less Free Clinic – The charity run service offers both dental and medical care. Teeth cleanings, physicals, and other health issues are addressed by doctors or nurses.
