Geauga County assistance programs.

Geauga Community Action, Inc.

This is the local community action agency, and they run the programs below.

Emergency Health and Medical Needs  - The agency can pay for prescriptions, medications, and over-the-counter drugs that are not covered by Medicaid or health insurance insurance. Emergency medical or dental assistance may also be offered.

Heating/Fuel/Electric - Electric or heating service must be in a state of disconnect or there is a lack of bulk fuel in order to get aid.

Emergency Financial Help - This assistance program provides aid to families to buy items or pay for services that are emergencies and that are considered non-recurring (which is defined as a situation not extending beyond 4 months) and which cannot be addressed using existing community resources. In general help may be offered for certain appliances and repair of appliances; utility bill payment assistance (including water); car repairs; clothing/shoes (work clothing or uniforms only); house/apartment/mobile home lot rent payments or security deposits; baby furniture; beds/mattresses, and household products. Emergency Transportation  - Funds to pay for transportation to appointments such as medical, public assistance, job interview, or counseling appointment. Consists of $25 gasoline vouchers.

Eviction Prevention and Late Rent Assistance - This service provides up to $400 towards paying rent that is 30 or more days late, as long as the payment will guarantee them at least another 30 days in the dwelling and prevent an eviction.

Fund for First Month's Rent/Security Deposit - The agency provides a maximum of $500 to be applied to first month's rent or security deposit to secure housing or apartments in Geauga County.

United Way of Geauga County

While funds are limited, the agency partners with a variety of local churches, non-profits and charities to provide temporary emergency financial aid for residents of Geauga County and Chardon Ohio. The organization provides assistance with the following expenses. Mortgage payments, rent, mobile home lot payments, heating and utility bill payments, fuel oil, gas money, and furnace repair. Also provides financial aid and assistance to access medical services, prescription medications (does not help with over the counter medications), and other urgent needs if deemed necessary and appropriate. Last, but not least, they offer vouchers for clothing that may be used at thrift stores. They also work with debt and credit counselors, and can have relationships with lenders such as Bank of America assistance programs. (440) 285-2261 ext. 227

Salvation Army

The office is in Bainbridge Ohio. They have limited financial assistance, and they provides temporary financial assistance and aid for those in emergency situations involving: transportation or utilities (gas, electric, and oil only - does not help with water or sewer bills), and prescriptions. In addition, the agency will also provide financial assistance for gasoline, car repair and prescription drugs. Call (440) 247-6030.

Geauga County Hunger Task Force

This is a partnership of churches and non-profits that provide the low income with food. They can provides up to a 7 day supply of groceries and food and vouchers. Other support includes canned and dry foods, toiletries  and cleaning products. Agencies that participate include Burton Congregational Church, Christ Presbyterian Church ((440) 729-1688), and the Pilgrim Christian Church. Call them for free food and vouchers.

Emergency financial aid and crisis assistance

Geauga County Job and Family Services administers a number of assistance programs, as funding allows. The primary resource may be offered as Block Grants. It can provide security deposit, first month's rent, and other aid for residents that need new housing due to a crisis. Rental assistance may be provided if you are faced with an eviction.

 

 

 

 

Energy assistance may be offered by Geauga Family Services as well. This can include money for heating expenses, natural gas, propane, or oil. Or some cooling assistance may be offered during a hot spell during the summer.

Other assistance can include, but is not limited to free gasoline vouchers for approved transportation needs, such as a job interview or doctor appointment. The non-profit also offers limited assistance for paying for prescription drugs and helps pay for emergency dental or medical bill assistance.

The regional Ashtabula County community action agency may offer some services in Geauga and Chardon as well. The federal funded EFSP (Emergency Food and Shelter) may have grants for paying rent, security deposits, or utility bills. Free food is offered from pantries or senior centers. Referrals to benefits such as Head Start and SNAP food stamps are available at the Ohio Benefit bank. Other social services are offered too. Click here.

Veterans Service Commission can support both families of active military personnel and veterans. The organization may have assistance, including vouchers, to pay for food, shelter (both rent or mortgage) and even utility bills. The local block grant (CSBG) program is also offered by Job And Family Services.  There are many components to this, which include housing assistance, budgeting, cash assistance, job search, utility help, school supplies and more. Case managers can guide people to all available resources.

Some other specific examples can include gasoline vouchers for needs such as an interview, vouchers to pay for prescription drugs, emergency medical bill or dental assistance, money for rent or utilities to prevent an eviction or disconnection. Also apply for government benefits such as Ohio Work First, food stamps, Medicaid, child care, motel vouchers and the HEAP low income energy assistance program. Bainbridge Civic Club can only help residents from the town. Limited financial assistance for utilities, fuel oil, appliances, food, or various other temporary needs can be provided.  On going support is offered. (440) 708-9829.

Geuga County food pantries

Bainbridge Area Food For Friends has emergency food, personal care items and cleaning supplies to people experiencing temporary hardship. A pantry is on site. Address is 17826 Chillicothe Rd., Chagrin Falls Township, OH 44023, (440) 708-9829.

Parkman Congregational Church has up to a 3 day supply of emergency non-perishable food. Dial (440) 548-4829 for hours.

Additional food banks in Geauga County can assist the low income. Using donations from the region, charities pass out free groceries or can serve a Christmas meal or provide toys to children. Some sites will even help with applications to SNAP food stamps and offer other support. Click here.
