Salvation Army assistance programs Fort Wayne and Allen County Indiana.

Several programs are offered by the Allen County and Fort Wayne Indiana Salvation Army to low income and struggling families. The primary social service programs help deal with housing issues, such as rent or utilities, food, clothing, and Christmas assistance. Or they help students in Fort Wayne by passing out free clothes, winter jackets and school supplies. Find how to help from from the Allen County IN Salvation Army.

Much of the material support or financial aid is offered in an emergency, by appointment only, and only when funds are available. There is also a Salvation Army family store and an adult rehabilitation center.

Emergency financial help in Allen County

Water assistance is limited to people with a disconnect notice and a copy of the denial letter you’re your local township. Salvation Army clients can only receive assistance with their bills twice in a lifetime and applications must be at least 6 months apart. The case managers also offer referrals to water company payment plans.

Many people in the Fort Wayne area are struggling with paying their housing costs, including their monthly rent and mortgage. It can be due to a job loss or some other crisis, like a medical emergency. Mortgage and/or rental assistance is offered when funds are available, and is done by appointment only. This program is available at most once per year. You also need to bring, among other things, a copy of an eviction letter, lease, and proof of your income.

Electric, heating and gas bill assistance is offered across Allen County Indiana to people to help them prevent a disconnection. Conditions include the applicant must have a copy of the action letter from township, they need to make an appointment, and it is emergency aid only.

Bus passes and tokens are available for qualified individuals who are seeking transportation to job search, work, interview, or doctor appointments. The Fort Wayne Salvation Army distributes them on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, when available. Clients to this transportation program can receive 3 bus passes once a week.

The Fort Wayne Food Pantry is open limited hours. No appointment is necessary, and groceries/food is distributed on a first come – first serve basis. Clients are available to come once a week.

Clothing vouchers may be offered to individuals who are in crisis or extreme financial hardship situations, which is determined on a case by case basis. Also, in Indiana, people who have been recently released from federal or state institutions may qualify for free clothing. In order to benefit, the applicant needs to bring an ID and release papers. Emergency Disaster Assistance can help families who are impacted by a house fire or flood. Financial aid may be offered, along with vouchers which may be written to the local Fort Wayne thrift stores for items lost in the natural or manmade disaster.

Summer cooling bill assistance is offered from Operation Cool Breeze. This program attempts to provide free or low cost air conditioners or fans to those seniors and at risk individuals with critical medical conditions that may be aggravated by the heat. This relies on donations and contributions from people across Allen County and Fort Wayne.

The Salvation Army in Allen County will also focus on the most vulnerable, including elderly, disabled, single mothers and others. Whether it is local support, or referrals to national programs, assistance is offered or referrals. They even help with Indiana disability benefits and applying to them.

Free seasonal and basic help from Salvation Army in Fort Wayne area

Tools for School program is offered by Salvation Army, and it was created and designed to provide free basic school supplies for children from low income families if their parents cannot afford the items necessary for their children to succeed in school. Teenagers and children in Fort Wayne can be supplied with free notebooks, bags, pens, pencils, backpacks, etc for students in grades K – 12. They also partner with other non-profits, churches, and organizations in the region.

The Angel Tree program can offer a new outfit, toys, or clothes during Christmas. Angel Tree tags are placed around Allen County, and each one will represent area children whose parents have applied for Christmas assistance. The tags are then distributed to local organizations, families, businesses and individuals.

The program can help ensure children and teenagers in Fort Wayne can get warm winter coat, a school uniform, new shoes, gifts and / or a new outfit. Volunteers and staff from the Salvation Army will distribute your gifts and donations to families in December, before the holiday season fully kicks an off. The Angel Tree program relies on your donations and contributions to provide a Merry Christmas to the needy, one child at a time.

 

 

 

 

The Salvation Army of Fort Wayne Adopt a Family programs goal is to partner with local businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals who will adopt children and families that demonstrate extreme and unique needs during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season. Families and children can receive clothing, toys, and gifts for all children and seniors in the home.

Applying for help or thrift store

There are two main offices. The first, at 2901 N Clinton St, Fort Wayne, IN 46805, (260) 744-2311, is the church and social services portion.  This office also houses the seasonal programs.  The second office, at 427 W Washington Blvd, Fort Wayne, IN 46802, (250) 424-1655,  manages the family stores and houses the men’s Adult Rehabilitation Center.  This is a free six month program for adult men struggling with addiction.
