Salvation Army assistance programs Flint and Genesee County.

Services provided by the Salvation Army can help the low income and less fortunate in Flint and Genesee County Michigan. There are a number of resources offered to qualified applicants - They include free food or hot meals, emergency rent, medical or energy bill help; free school supplies, motel vouchers or Christmas gifts and more. In addition, the Genesee County Michigan Salvation Army centers also focus on case management, long term stability, and ministry services for the poor or homeless.

CEAP emergency help from Salvation Army

Families and individuals who are in a crisis can explore the Comprehensive Emergency Assistance Program, which can provide financial assistance with paying bills including rent, heating, food, prescriptions and more. All aid is limited.

In addition, a focus is on offering advice and support including budget counseling, mentoring services, credit repair, and information and referral. They also work closely with the Michigan Department of Human Services. The goal is to help people achieve success over the long term and address the cause of their hardship.

The Flint Michigan Salvation Army Social Services Department helps low income families, seniors, and individuals with emergency needs. The primary resource is the Comprehensive Emergency Assistance Program. Aid is only offered for people who are out of options and who have no other forms of public assistance available to them, so it is a last resort program.

Genesee County Michigan clients facing a hardship and who are in crisis situations receive help and Social Services. Case managers will not only help address the emergency at hand, but offer support throughout the crisis and help managing resources in the future.

  • Energy bills – Receive financial assistance with utility shut-off notices, or if you are out of heating oil or fuel.
  • Rent and mortgage assistance is offered for those facing an eviction or foreclosure.

 

 

 

  • Transportation includes bus passes and maybe vouchers for gasoline. Or find other ways to get a free tank of gasoline.
  • Seasonal Assistance includes free Thanksgiving and Christmas meals or gifts along with low income back to school supply assistance programs.
  • Food – Groceries, meals, and supplemental food. The main center is the food pantry located at Beecher Corps.
  • Credit and budget counseling is offered.
  • Mentoring Services as well as information and referrals are offered.

The Salvation Army of Flint Michigan covers all of Genesee County. The non-profit provides limited amounts of cash and financial assistance to local families. A focus is on those who are facing an eviction or foreclosure, or utility shutoff. Families and individuals seeking any form of emergency financial assistance must apply to the Michigan Department of Human Services, as they need to explore their eligibility for state emergency relief first.

In addition, in order to make an appointment with the Salvation Army some or all of the following is required by them. Be sure to bring proof of household income, the court ordered eviction or Consumers Energy shut off notice, the Decision Notice from DHS, receipts of bills paid over the last 30 days, and more. Food, groceries, meals, and Supplemental Food Assistance is usually available on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Once again, interested applicants need to apply for any food items first, and walk ins are not supported. You also will need to apply prior to the Distribution Day in order to receive supplemental food assistance! When you apply, be sure to bring proof of your hardship, as well as Social Security Cards, Current Photo ID, and Proof of Income.

 

 

 

 

Additional Social Services and Guidance

The Salvation Army offers many other free services and other programs in the county. They are wide ranging. Some are free, others are open to the public (such as the thrift store). In any case, the additional resources in the Flint Michigan region include the following.

  • Case management, which is wide ranging and includes job programs, budgeting services, credit counseling and more.
  • Information on free or low cost medical care, whether clinics or Affordable Care Act insurance plans. Salvation Army staff can offer referrals as well, including to free community health clinics in Michigan.
  • Low cost or free summer camps for kids, information on government surplus commodities, State Emergency Relief (SER), and homeless programs.

Applying for Salvation Army programs in Flint Michigan area

All financial assistance has a number of requirements that need to be met, and there is an intake process required and that is done by appointment only. Applicants will need to apply directly with a case manager.
