Emergency assistance from Love in Dupage County.
Find information on emergency assistance programs from LOVE. The Dupage County non-profit charity works with churches, charities, and social service agencies to provide referrals and linkage to resources. While not as common, in some cases LOVE or a partner church will offer direct financial aid themselves.
The various organizations have created a Clearinghouse that struggling individuals can contact. Callers can get information on crisis programs, such as free food, shelter, eviction prevention, and similar resources. At the same time, case management and self-sufficiency is administered. Most of the county is supported by LOVE, including, but not limited to the towns of Addison, Darien, Elmhurst, Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook, Glen Ellyn, Westmont, Bensenville, and many others.
When seeking help, a formal intake and application process is in place. If qualified, some examples of what may be available for low income families experiencing a temporary, unexpected emergency includes funds for utility bills, rent, or maybe even car repairs. Any aid is not for people that are dependent on government benefits, but the intent is for alleviating a crisis.
Members of the Love Clearinghouse will work to determine the applicant's eligibility. If there is a social service agency already that offers a program in Dupage County, then the client is referred to that organization. If there are no current options available, then LOVE may have its own funding or rely on a local church.
- Rent help or utility bill assistance is only offered if an applicant is back on the path to self-sufficiency and can pay their housing costs on their own in the future.
- Love or is partner charities can assist with car repairs if the applicant is working and needs transportation to get to their job.
- Food, shelter, holiday assistance, referrals, and other support is available as well.
Any requests for financial aid will need to be proven. Case managers will also verify the information and nature of the problem. They will also work closely with partners, such as churches or other non-profit community agencies to arrange resources for the client. Any cash paid out goes to the landlord, utility company, or creditor.
The Dupage County Community Resource guide is also available at LOVE. The organization has a tremendous amount of information on local non-profit community agency agencies, charities and church resources. Staff will link qualified callers with church ministries or local agencies to address immediate needs and to arrange for self-sufficiency.
This database is extensive. It has information on free food assistance, LIHEAP, emergency shelters, counseling, loan programs to pay rent or bills, infant needs pantries, government benefits, job training, budget counseling and many other DuPage County services.
Toy Express is a form of Christmas assistance. A few gifts, or articles of clothing (such as a winter coat) will be given to qualified children from lower income families. Meals may be served too. Call 630-512-8673.
A Refugee Program is available and is known as Helping Hands. It helps newcomers to Illinois and the county, with a focus on those from Africa and Myanmar. They can get help developing daily living skills, language and budgeting skills.
Self-sufficiency services include budget and family counseling, job training, debt reduction, and employment. This is for those seeking skills and stability in their lives. This will almost always be a requirement for Dupage County families.
