Each year thousands of local children access the Head Start program in the greater Dallas area. Almost 50 centers operate across the region. All services that are offered to children and families are provided at no cost to the family. The non-profit locations in Dallas operate from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A number of services and resources are offered by the Dallas Texas Head Start program. Low income children are able to get their health and nutritional needs met, at the same time as stimulating and developing a number of skills in them, including pre-reading skills as well as improving their self-esteem. Children who are part of the program will have full access to personal computers and be provided the training so that they can become adept at utilizing them as learning tools.
Both children and their families can benefit from Head Start. The program is also able to help address many of the needs of the low income child’s family as well as the student. The program encourages low income parents to become involved in their child’s education and the Head Start program will help families achieve self-reliance over the long term and ensure they gain their independence. Social services staff who are part of the various agencies and non-profits that administer Head Start will enroll parents in literacy, GED, and also English-as-a-second-language class. Counselors will be able to refer children to a large number of charities as well as social services providers in the Dallas Texas area, place the child’s parent in job training programs or community colleges and provide such additional services as substance abuse prevention education and referrals to medical care. The Scholastic Early Childhood Program (SECP) - Ensures children in Head Start program enter public school with the knowledge they need to succeed in that environment.
Health and dental care -The Head Start program in Dallas is able to provide preventative health care, free childcare, information on and access to extended social services, and also services such as prenatal education services to the parents of toddlers and infants. If needed the head start program may be able to assist teenage parents in obtaining a medical home for herself and her child for healthcare. Emergency assistance and referrals - A large number of diverse community resources in areas such as educational opportunities, emergency assistance, parenting classes, job and employment training and counseling are also provided. All members of a household, or any member that is considered to be an integral part of the family’s development, is included and may be able to receive a referral.
