Salvation Army programs in Lowndes County and Columbus Mississippi.

The resources available from the Columbus Mississippi Salvation Army range from programs for youth to emergency financial aid for paying bills from social services. The other main resource is the low cost Family Store, which sells items at a reduced price to the greater Lowndes County community.

Some of the assistance programs are much more limited, and this is particularly true of the Social Services. As the amount of money available for helping with rent, electric bills, gasoline for work, etc. is limited. The support really depends on the money raised from the sale of goods at the Family Store. On the other hand the programs for Youth and the Ministry services are more readily available.

Columbus Mississippi social services

The Salvation Army assists in a few different ways. Each of them vary. The funding is limited, and applications are only accepted a few days per week; depending on the assistance program. More details are below.

Anyone facing hunger can use the food pantry. This is open most of the day on Tuesday and Fridays, but the hours can change. It will provide either a free box of groceries or referrals to public aid, such as SNAP food stamps. There may also be holiday food baskets at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. The lobby is a good place for information.

Free vouchers for clothing for work, items for a home, stuff for school, or job training may be given. The items are disbursed from the Family Store in Columbus Mississippi. Salvation Army social workers need to approve this, and the goods are only for clients that are in an unusual emergency. There are other sources for free stuff for low income families as well that can be used.

Emergency utility bill assistance may be offered by the Lowndes County Salvation Army. In some cases there may be either a few dollars for back rent or other housing needs, but that form of support is rare. Applications are accepted Monday morning, Wednesday, and Thursday. Any support is first come-served, as funding allows.
