Basic needs can be met by the Salvation Army. Families in Charleston, Kanawha, Taylor, Barbour and Randolph County can call upon this non-profit organization for emergency assistance (for paying bills, rent or food, etc.) and case management. There are also free items from the Salvation Army in Charleston WV region, including back to school supplies, food, substance abuse counseling, Christmas toys and other support.

Some funds may be offered (if available) to help deal with a crisis, but more than likely the client will get access to social services as well as referrals. As there are many Charleston West Virginia area and Kanawha County non-profits and government programs that assist with housing, utility bills, medical and other costs.

The towns and counties that are served by the Salvation Army Corps benefit greatly from the continuing work of the dedicated professionals and volunteers who are part of the Salvation Army. Qualified low income, unemployed, and struggling people can get help in the form of emergency financial assistance which is offered to families throughout the year. This includes help in the form of free food, utility and heating bill assistance, rent, and prescription medicines.

A wide variety of other miscellaneous needs can be met by the faith based Salvation Army organization as well. Many locations also offer a clothing and furniture distribution center on site, and allow for weekly rummage sales.

Visitations can be made to the homebound and shut-ins on a monthly basis. The volunteer will also leave reading materials, remembrances, and if requested, offer the senior or homebound prayer and a Bible reading session.

Free Salvation Army seasonal programs

Christmas assistance is always in high demand in West Virginia. The Salvation Army will do its best to meet the emergency needs of families, seniors, and children throughout the holiday season. The primary programs offered to Kanawha and Randolph County families include Angel Tree, which is a donor driven program, as well as a Traditional Toy Shop. Gifts, meals, toys, and other items are provided for specific children and senior citizens. Remembrances & Gifts are offered to the Homebound and Shut-ins. Meals and food are provided by Christmas Dinner Vouchers.

Many of the holiday programs rely on the support of volunteers. At no other time of the year are donations and volunteers needed more than during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season. The Salvation Army heavily relies on committed and dedicated helpers to provide services in a vast array of areas and needs.

The Angel Tree Program provides members of the Charleston West Virginia community and other areas the opportunity to give back in a very special way. The people or businesses who volunteer choose a needy family or a child that they would like to shop for. The items they provide that child will help make their Christmas a little brighter and more joyful.

The volunteer will need to purchase clothes and/or toys for them. The program is called the Angel Tree, and thousands of children across Kanawha and Barbour County, among other regions, benefit from it every year. Contact your local Salvation Army directly to help out, or stop by an Angel Christmas tree at local shopping malls, which is where they are often located.

Students (even adult students going back to school or college) can get free supplies for the school year. Companies such as Wal-Mart and Target, as well as volunteers from across counties such as Kanawha and Randolph, collect items. There may be backpacks, laptops or Chromebooks, sneakers and clothes, pens or pencils, and all the other supplies needed for students from K to college.

The Red Kettle Campaign is a long standing tradition in which volunteers and members of the public can support the Salvation Army. The program is the primary fundraising effort of The West Virginia Salvation Army, and they always need people to volunteer to be bell ringers to help raise the funds that the Salvation Army always needs.
