The entire western New York region has been hit hard over the last several years from economic weakness, and unfortunately the number of people who need some form of rent or housing help has increased year after year. These agencies recognize that, and many partner with both the federal government, the state of New York, and other local charities and non-profit organizations.
Each program will have its own application process, and criteria that need to be met in order to receive rent help. Some of the non-profit agencies and programs will also have limited funding. It is always best to apply for help early while the organizations still have funding.
While the ultimate goal is to keep people in their homes and apartments so they do not become homeless, the fact is that there are currently homeless individuals in the city of Buffalo. Some some of the agencies may administer programs to help the homeless find a new home, pay their security deposits, first months rent, or even pay for moving costs and expenses.

Erie County, Department of Environment and Planning runs the federal government funded Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. This program was created from government stimulus funds, which is formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. If you apply for housing or rent help from this Erie County government agency, and are qualified, this agency may be able to provide rent or housing assistance. The target is for people who are faced with a short term hardship, and who just need a little additional support over the short term.
