Black Hills Energy Kansas assistance programs.

Black Hills Energy will provide customers with direct financial assistance, grants, and energy conservation tactics. The company also has information on federal government resources (such as LIHEAP and weatherization) and can also direct individuals to local resources, such as those offered by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.

Most of the customers in Kansas receive their natural gas service from Black Hills Energy. The company will offer these customers a number of resources, including payment plans. If you are struggling and call for assistance, the company can also offer contact information and referrals for local energy assistance agencies. This is offered to customers who call seeking options and local resources that can help in managing their account.

Communication is always a key. Black Hills strongly encourages customers concerned about their utility bill to call them before it’s due and before they fall behind. Customer service managers from the company can “walk” individuals through the qualifications for each assistance program. They will assist customers in the enrollment process for their budget-friendly payment plans. If your best option is an outside agency, then Black Hills Energy will put you in touch with the right assistance agency in Kansas if that’s a good option for you.

Many customers have outstanding balances due on their utility bills, especially after the cold winter season. So communication with Black Hills is key. They have information on several public agencies that can help customers in need, non-profits like the Salvation Army as well government organizations like the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. They can also direct people to the federal government funded Low Income Energy Assistance Program.

Black Hills fully supports the Kansas Cold Weather Rule. This is required by the state government and it applies to all public utilities and electric companies that operate in the state. This is effective during the winter from November 1 through March 31. The law requires that all companies, including Black Hills Energy, suspend bill-based service interruptions and disconnections if the National Weather Service forecast is for a temperature 35 degrees or colder within the next 24 hours. This will help ensure that people have some form of heat during extremely cold periods of time.

HeatShare is available in partnership with the Salvation Army. It will provide grants and cash payments toward paying natural gas, heating and air conditioning bills. Funds can go for all different types of fuel, including electricity, natural gas, or propane. Black Hill customers who are having trouble with their heating systems may also qualify for aid to either fix or replace the system. The disabled and elderly are given priority where funds are limited. Call 1-800-336-4547.

Another option is Black Hills Cares. This relies on donations and contributions from the community. It provides funds and cash grants to help people with paying their energy bills or emergency energy-related expenses, such as the repair or a furnace. Any donations that people make will be matched dollar for dollar by Black Hills Energy. Every bill that you receive will include a form for making an optional monthly or one-time donation to Black Hills Cares. All donated funds go to those who need help and not to administrative costs. The donation you make will be tax-deductible, and the company will match it and send the money to the donor’s local agency. So people who contribute know you’re helping someone in your own community.

Weatherization is a free federal government conservation program. It will help people manage their energy bill more effectively. Local community action agencies identify low income candidates for the free weatherization programs. Black Hills Energy customers in Kansas can get free energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs, extra insulation, batteries for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and other support.

Black Hills Energy’s customer representative number is 888-890-5554. You can also find additional information and energy saving tips on their website.
