When in a crisis, the main churches, charities, and government organizations that offer financial help in Hernando County are noted below. The agencies provide everything from grant money to help with paying utility bills to loans, rent or mortgage help, free food and more in the Spring Hill area. Keeping people fed (free food); power on (utility bill assistance); health (free medical); employed (job training) are just some of the goals in the region. Low income financial assistance programs

The Mid Florida Community Services is an agency that may be able to help. They offer qualified individuals a wide range of social services and assistance programs. Most of them are aimed to supporting family self-sufficiency or maintaining independence of low income families, seniors, or persons with disabilities in Hernando County.

  • Mid Florida Community Services provides limited financial help to low income households for paying their utilities, rent or a mortgage. There are also programs that help people get transportation, either a car or gas, for their job.
     
  • Low income home energy assistance program (LIHEAP) applications are processed. This is a federal government funded program that provides for an annual benefit that is provided to eligible low to moderate income qualified households to pay their electric bills.   • Additional energy help is offered too. The goal of the Hernando County Weatherization Assistance Program is to help people save money by reducing the monthly energy burden and bills of a qualified household.
     
  • Last, but not least, case management, information, referral to other programs, and counseling are also provided. Counselors will work with applicant to help them become self-sufficient over the long term.

Hernando County Salvation Army runs several different programs and help thousands of people per year in the area. Some of what they offer includes emergency assistance for items such as food, (also provides USDA food and have an on site pantry), blankets, electric heaters, or vouchers for prescription medications.

  • In addition, the Salvation Army in Hernando County provides limited FEMA and government funds, when available for paying utility bills. Hernando County Section 8 Voucher Program is a federal government program that can help families pay their rent. The HUD service will place people  into affordable, private homes and apartments. Local residents who receive Section 8 vouchers from the county will still be able to locate their own rental housing across the region, including from private landlords. Limited funds for paying rent may be provided from several agencies. There are organizations that focus on tacking the housing issue across the region, so they may offer emergency rental assistance, money for a security deposit, or just eviction prevention advice. Food Pantry at First United Methodist Church Spring Hill offers canned goods, dairy items and staples. Publix provides bread and baked goods twice monthly, people contribute and items are also bought in bulk from Suncoast Harvest Food Bank. People Helping People in Hernando County is a volunteer and donation services in which the charity tries to help the low-income. There are free groceries, household furnishing products, and money to help pay bills including utility or rent. Catholic Charity social services can help people living in poverty. Most of the support is for basic needs, such as clothing, food, or a low cost thrift store. However the charity may be able to arrange some financial aid to pay bills or a security deposit. Funding can come from many sources, including loans, for low income families in Brooksville, Spring Hill, and across the county. Christian Fellowship Church, which is located in Brooksville also has a food pantry. They give out free hygiene stuff, serve meals to the homeless, and distribute groceries from 7391 Lykes Dublin Rd, Brooksville, FL 34601. Phone: (352) 593-4271.

Hernando County FL assistance programsCalvary Church of the Nazarene runs a food pantry distribution center for the low income and struggling in the community. Call for fruits, vegetables, rice, and other products. This locations may also have free holiday meals, including for Christmas or Thanksgiving. The center provides a broad range of treatment and diagnostic services including pediatric care, primary adult, prenatal care, specialty medicine, and dental care. Medical professionals will also offer radiological and laboratory work, as well as allied support services like health education and nutrition.
