The Catholic Charities of Central Florida, which is based in Lakeland but services the entire county, also runs various assistance programs. Many churches also participate. They offer what is known as an Emergency Assistance Program that provides crisis and as well as social services for low income and other clients in need of urgent basic human needs. Polk County Social Services as well as Department of Children and Families, which is located in Bartow, runs public assistance programs including ACCESS Florida. Vouchers or free gift certificates may be provided to the lowest income families in Polk County. They can use those vouchers to pay for needed items, including back to school supplies or furniture. Faith in Action North Lakeland, Inc. offers numerous social services and emergency assistance.
