Nevada Energy assistance programs.
Customers of Nevada Energy who are struggling with paying their utility bills may qualify for financial assistance or discounts on their energy bills or a payment plan. Several assistance programs are offered by the energy company as well as the government. Priority is usually given to low income families with children, seniors, and the disabled. Funding is often limited, and unfortunately all Nevada Energy customers will not be able to receive help.
Federal government funded programs that are supported by Nevada Energy include the Energy Assistance Program, which is often called LIHEAP, as well as weatherization. More information on how to get help and the phone number is below. Or read more on LIHEAP utility bill assistance grants in Nevada.
The state of Nevada Welfare division works closely with Nevada Energy and other utility companies to run the Energy Assistance Program. Applications are accepted July 1 of each year and qualified people will receive financial help for their bills until funding runs out. After applying for aid, and being accepted into the program, the financial assistance provided will be based on the applying household's total gross income and annual energy use.
You can apply in multiple years, however any financial aid is only distributed to households once per year. Families will still need to pay some of their Nevada Energy utility bills, as federal aid was never intended to pay 100% of their costs. Another federal government program is Weatherization Assistance. The Housing Division of the Nevada Department of Business and Industry (NHD) administers this in partnership with community action agencies, and it is run as a conservation and savings program. This federal resource can help families that receive their power from Nevada Energy to reduce their monthly utility bills by installing free conservation improvements to their home, such as insulation, windows, minor home repairs, CFL light bulbs, and similar updates. Most, if not all of these updates, are offered at no cost to income qualified Nevada residents.
Another relevant option is the NV Energy Special Assistance Fund for Energy (SAFE). While not paid for by the federal government, it works with those options. For example, the SAFE program can help those who either get help from Energy Assistance Program, or who have used up all of those government and public resources. It was created to help lower income people who are faced with an emergency or hardship and who are falling behind on their utility bills. It can supplement federal government low-income as well as state of Nevada energy assistance programs.
Those are the two primary federal government created programs available. However Nevada Energy also administers many of their own financial assistance programs, grants, and discounts for customers. As for all services, applicants need to meet income and other conditions before receiving help.
For example, throughout the year there may be Energy Assistance Expos that are held, with many focusing on senior citizens. On site will be government agencies and local non-profits. Advice and services may be able to help you discuss weatherization options for your home, pay your past due electric bill, and provide free rebate information. The sessions will also offer energy education and conservation services.
In addition to the federal government weatherization program indicated above, NV Energy offers their own savings and discount program. It is known as Comfort Savings. The utility company will provide customers with a free in-home energy evaluation and audits. The main goal is to recommend improvements, identify current energy usage, and install all of these updates for the homeowner.
If found to be qualified, all resources are offered for free to income qualified individuals. Free Nevada Energy Comfort Savings services can include such things as pipe insulation, CFLs, high efficiency showerheads and water saving faucet aerators, insulation, door and window caulking, and more. Relief through Energy Assistance to Prevent Customer Hardships, better known as REACH, can help Nevada Energy customers who fall into a specific category. Seniors and people over 62 years old, military members who are in the Reserve or National Guard, and disabled can receive energy bill assistance.
